KUWAIT FOUNDATION FOR THE
ADVANCEMENT OF SCIENCE (KFAS)
KFAS is considered one of the most
outstanding organisations in Kuwait. The whole idea of its
establishment was initiated by His Highness the Amir Sheikh
Jaber Al-Ahmad Al-Sabah, when he was Crown Prince in 1976,
in an attempt to encourage and support scientific research.
KFAS is playing a major role in financing scientific research
projects being undertaken by various scientific bodies. It
also cooperates with similar organisations on the Arab and
international levels. It offers the following prizes with
the aim of encouraging scientific research:
The Kuwait Award, which is granted in various branches
of sciences and arts on the local and Arab level every
year.
Awards for authors and translators, which are granted
during the annual book fair held in Kuwait.
Encouragement of distinguished university and college
graduates.
The Foundation also
makes large-scale contributions in the field of publishing.
It has published a large number of books disseminating scientific
knowledge and has also provided films and recordings on biographies
of Arab and foreign scientists with the aim of highlighting
their scientific contributions.
The Foundation is chaired by His Highness the Amir, who sponsored
the inauguration of its new premises in 1978.
