National Park Service underwater
archaeologist George R. Fischer's letter of July 22, 1974, to Dr. E. Lee
Spence regarding the Sea Research Society's then pending application to
GSA for a permit to salvage the Confederate submarine Hunley.
{Note: Fischer was a member of the Sea Research Society's distinguished
Board of Advisors and had voted for Spence's doctorate (Doctor of Marine
Histories) in 1972, which can be viewed as a real indicator of Fischer's
belief in and respect for Spence's knowledge, abilities and discoveries
(including Spence's 1970 discovery of the Hunley). This letter
was written approximately six years prior to fiction writer Clive
Cussler, NUMA and SCIAA's sixteen year search for the wrecks of U.S.S.
Housatonic and C.S.S. Hunley. Please note that Fischer's
letter mentions Spence's previous correspondence regarding the Hunley.} |
