Set Up/Peripherals

Unlocking the courses in the game depends on the grades you collect when completing the levels. Initially you’ll only need to get a C to progress onto the next course, but later on Bs and Cs will be on your agenda. To get these illustrious grades you need to get five goals spread around obscure areas of the courses under a specific time, as well as collect as many green gems as you can along the way. You should also keep a sharp eye out for the special items you can pick up along the way, including new board designs.

We all know that Konami are great developers. You only have to look at their past work to confirm this. So why something so… unfinished has come to the GameCube is beyond us. First impressions are not too bad at all; the front end is quite nice, the menus are all presented impressively enough and the Disney characters on offer give a familiar feel to things. But once you’re in the game the blandness begins.

Even if you can get past the fact that the first levels bears more than a little resemblance to the San Francisco themed area of Sonic Adventure 2, you won’t be able to get past everything else. For starters, there’s the lack of speed. Even when flying downhill off of a ramp, your speed will half without warning, and don’t even mention going along a flat surface. Then there’s the camera – sometimes getting stuck in walls, other times flipping 180 degrees for no reason at all. The handling is the worst though – you know where you want to go but getting there is such a battle.

The fact that the game is so difficult is purely down to the excruciatingly painful controls. This is such a shame – the levels, while containing pop-up are nicely designed and show considerable flair. But this is the only thing going for what is otherwise an extremely flawed title and a blemish on Konami’s history
