Don't Forget, You Can Play GameCube Games on the Wii

Best thing about the Wii: It has a GameCube in it! So players who busied themselves with the PlayStation 2 or the Xbox, have a chance to catch up and get to know the little Nintendo cube. Sure, the GC didn't sell so well in its run, but that doesn't mean the console didn't have its fair share of strong titles. Over at blog Infendo, they have a nice round-up of GameCube exclusives you might've missed. Or hey, you might've totally not missed them! They are: more »

BioWare At Work On A New KOTOR?

Wondering what that BioWare/Lucasarts project was going to be? Oh, come on. Like you couldn't guess. During EA's analyst report earlier today, it was seemingly revealed that in addition to working on more Mass Effect, Dragon Age and a "New MMO", BioWare are also handling a new Knights of the Old Republic title. Which means that, if accurate, it's not their upcoming MMO. So, a new, straight-up RPG, then? Probably. If this is indeed correct (and we're checking with EA), your excitement glands can't possibly repel joy of this magnitude.

Mass Effect PC Screenshots

Not content with telling us how the PC version of Mass Effect will differ from the 360 one, BioWare are going to show us how they differ. They've released eight screens for the upcoming port, which showcase not only the tidier graphics, but also the welcome UI changes, including the Biotic hotkeys (above, top-left) and a re-jiggered menu/inventory system.

What's The Hold Up With Spore? Will Wright Explains

Spore's certainly been a long time coming, but it seems that fans of just about every genre are overwhelmingly excited about it. It's finally coming in September, thank God. Now we just want to know: what the hell took so long? Newsweek's N'Gai Croal asked that very question of the game's designer Will Wright who reveals that it wasn't just frequent smoke breaks that led to the delay, but an ever increasingly complex set of features. We've got soft spots all over for Crysis vids that show the game's physics engine being messed around with. Normally, they just overwhelm you with numbers, but this one's a little more creative. Super Smash Bros. Brawl Sells A Million

Super Smash Bros. Brawl is a super smash hit in Japan. When it went on sale, the game sold out at loads of Tokyo game shops, and in the last two weeks, the title has shifted a million copies. It took Wii Fit seven weeks to hit a million copies sold, and it took Wii Sports eleven weeks to hit that milestone. That makes Super Smash Bros. Brawl the fastest selling Wii game, which should make Nintendo very, very happy.

Halo 3 Final Run Immortalized in LEGO

The last moments of Halo 3 were really pretty exciting. Fast driving, over-orchestrated theme music, unavoidable deaths—sure it was a bit Halo Kart, but it was an exciting conclusion all the same. But all those polygons pale in comparison to the still LEGO version. (Hit the jump and the picture goes all mega enlarged for you viewing pleasure.) I mean, it's LEGO. Sorry Bungie. Pandemic Working On New Lord Of The Rings Title

My aching sense of disappointment at the cancellation of EA's Lord of the Rings Oblivion clone The White Council still lingers. Is PlayStation 3 Backwards Compatibility Dead? Maybe Not

The one version of the PlayStation 3 that currently supports PlayStation 2 software—via emulation of the "Emotion Engine"—looks like it's about to go the way of the dodo. Resident Evil 5 Going Xbox 360 Only? Capcom Says "No"

With the Game Developers Conference just a week away, we're expecting a few megaton bombs to drop, most likely in the form of big shooter announcements and hands-on time with games previously kept away from middling press types. Amid hints from Microsoft that it has one or two reveals still up its corporate sleeve has come chatter that Resident Evil 5 may become an Xbox 360 exclusive. The source? A GameStop listing that shows the title for the 360, but not for its other announced platform, the PlayStation 3. Not much to go on, considering the game has been announced as a multi-platform title months ago, but not out of the realm of possibility.

Curious, we asked Capcom Senior Director of Communications Chris Kramer about the speculation, who responded "Resident Evil 5 is coming for PS3 and 360."

Wow. That tease from last week really was Red Alert 3! Just goes to show, dream long enough and hard enough and those dreams can actually come true. Microsoft & Hardware Manufacturers To Form PC Gaming "Alliance"?

According to Dean Takahashi over at the San Jose Mercury News, a number of the PC world's biggest names - inclusing Microsoft, AMD (so ATi), Nvidia and Intel - will at GDC announce a PC gaming "alliance", targeted at promoting the PC as a gaming platform. They'll be hoping to lure big-name developers and publishers back to the PC, many of who have walked away from the platform due to piracy concerns and the lure of the console market, and here's hoping they succeed. Millions of dollars in revenue from MMOs and casual, ad-supported games are great for those in on that action, but a lot of us just want to play better - and more - good old-fashioned PC games.

Impressions

GTA IV: Reinventing a World

Tucked away in a secluded bungalow in West Hollywood's Château Marmont, a hotel as famous for those who stay there as it is infamous for those who have died there, a world reimagined comes into focus.

Standing hands akimbo, a nonplussed expression planted firmly on his almost cel-shaded face, Niko Bellic could easily be a touched-up still. But it's no bullshot. The world around Bellic is bustling with activity: Bits of trash float on a digital drift of wind, people walk by, cars cruise in and out of the shot, an almost familiar skyline fills the hazy background. A palette of city sounds laid over this living diorama completes the effect.

"We decided we wanted to go back to the basics and reimagine the world," Jeronimo Barrera, Rockstar Games Vice President of Product Development, says. "The results have been incredible."

Grand Theft Auto IV is, its creators tell me, the biggest leap forward in experiential sandbox gaming to ever come to the franchise, larger even than the one that brought the once 2D top-down series into the third dimension.

"In many ways it's a bigger leap going from San Andreas to GTA IV than it was going from 2D to 3D," Barrera says.

GET YOUR FUN IN NOW Caveat Emptor

Guitar Hero III Wii Disc Swap Plan Leaves Gamers Discless

When Activision shipped Guitar Hero III: Legends of Rock for Wii sans promised Dolby Pro Logic surround sound, audiophiles were pissed. Rightly so, we thought. The ensuing replacement plan, which would provide affected Wii owners saddled with mono sound with a replacement disc, was welcome, but was soon followed by the bitter taste of bad customer service.

Now that those seeking a remastered copy of Guitar Hero III are getting their fulfillment forms, they probably find themselves thrice screwed. Seems Activision will take a good three to four weeks to supply Wii owners with a working-as-promised copy and only after they've sent in their current discs. No doubt those in possession of the Wii version of the game will enjoy staring at their empty DVD cases for a good month.

Looks like another case of EA and MTV getting something right with Rock Band, with Activision leaving customers high and dry. Thanks for the pics, Mike.

Nintendo

Shigeru Miyamoto, Reformed Gambler and Smoker

What we know about Nintendo's Shigeru Miyamoto: He plays the banjo, has a pet dog, likes gardening. Those are the typical insights we usually get about the Super Mario Bros.

What we know about pachinko: It's a form of gambling that's just barely legal in Japan. Instead of winning cash, players win metal balls. (If players won cash, pachinko would actually be gambling.) The players then "sell" these metal balls to a separate shop typically next to the pachinko parlor. Thus, players can actually "win" money in a round about, yet legal way. Do realize that while those noisy pachinko parlors aren't exactly the most reputable places, a cross section of society does spin those metal balls.

In an interview with Nintendo honcho Satoru Iwata, Shigeru Miyamoto divulges:

Finally, A Hi-Res Look At Street Fighter IV

Finally, a decent look at the returning original eight from Street Fighter II. Not Quite Exclusive

Mass Effect Coming to PC

Mass Effect may still be a 360 console exclusive, but come May of this year PC gamers will be getting their own taste of BioWare's epic space RPG. Today EA has announced that Mass Effect for the PC is heading our way, featuring all of the good bits of the 360 release with some added enhancements to spice things up for the mouse and keyboard set. High resolution visuals, run & gun control that allows players to assign hotkeys to their powers (woot!), a new decryption mini-game, and - the best bit - a new inventory screen GUI that makes it easier for players to swap out and upgrade their weapons and armor. Sounds like those of us who couldn't quite get into the swing of the 360 version might get another stab at the multi-award-winning title this spring. Square Enix Cuts Down Sword Pirates

Odds are many of you already own one or more Final Fantasy replica weapons - and that frightens me - but at least they are generally of the more shoddy, unlicensed sword replicas you were likely to find on the cheap via eBay or Bob's Discount Cutlery Emporium. Now Square Enix is taking steps to get those sharp, pointy objects out of the hands of fans, having filed a federal lawsuit in the Central District of California against those whole would infringe upon their intellectual property. At least four manufacturers are named in the suit, which came about after the US Department of Homeland Security and Customs and Border Patrol seized a crate of counterfeit swords designed in the style of famous Final Fantasy weapons. Square Enix investigated, and while many resellers ceased their rampant reselling, the companies targeted by this lawsuit refused to cooperate, calling down spiky-haired justice upon them.

Why We've Retired Hot Tears of Shame

Late last week, we introduced the "MAXIMUM RISKY" tag. Questions appeared: Where did the "Hot Tears of Shame" one go? Why did it leave us? Does it hate us now? Don't get us wrong, we love the "Hot Tears of Shame" tag, but we had to retire it. While we popularized the phrase, it was originally coined by writer Patrick Macias for his podcast. We're gianormous fans of Macias and have featured him and his books several times on Kotaku: here, here, here and here. Heck, I even write for his magazine Otaku USA and just finished up a piece for him last month. Macias doesn't cover games at all, but "Hot Tears of Shame" was our homage to him and the quirky Japan reporting he's done. more »

PSP Redesign Concept Longs For Reality

The PSP Slim is alright, but it was a redesign that fell far short from standards we've seen from Nintendo. This PSP concept takes something I normally detest, sliders, and makes it practical. Hiding the buttons under the screen offers more visual real estate per pocket-filling inch. And if such a screen could tilt even 10 degrees for glare and support touch controls for a little on-screen QWERTY functionality, I'd throw by DS to the ground and stomp it with all my might. But alas, it's not a Sony design. Here's the open shot:
