The exact origins of the NATO emblem are unclear, although it is known that the basic design was conceived by a member of the International Staff.
On 14th October 1953, the Council "approved a Flag for NATO, the design of which was a white and blue compass on a dark blue background."
The Official NATO-colour code is Pantone Colour Guide No 280
The emblem is normally used in blue or black on a white or light-coloured background. If the emblem is to be used in a colour lighter than its background, its design should conform to that of the NATO flag.
The lines extending from the points of the star should be included but may vary in length according to the space which the emblem is to occupy.
