A fantastic game that any shmup fan with a Dreamcast should buy as soon as possible. It's been said that this will be the very last offical release for the system, and if that's true, it'll definitely be going out in style.

Inarguably, what Under Defeat does, it does very well. The execution is perfectly pitched and it clearly ticks each and every box the developers drew up on the ideas table. But it's hard to shake the feeling that this is '80s gaming dressed in '00s visuals running on '90s hardware. The gameplay is sweet and eloquent but, underneath it also tired and relentlessly derivative. [JPN Import]

It has a great combination of impressive graphics and its learning curve is much friendlier than most other side-scrolling shooters. Unfortunately, for a total price of around $65, Under Defeat is good but not $65 good. [JPN Import]

Edge Magazine
The meagre, slow release of extra credits forces a thoughtful learning curve that allows the game to reveal its charms in a steady, considered and ultimately very satisfying manner. [JPN Import; June 2006, p.97]

Guru gave it a10:
One of the best games on Dreamcast, fast paced action + outstanding GFX!!! Smoke and explosions are like in Call of Duty 2 on X360. Amazing.

SYC gave it an8:
A well considered, thoroughly enjoyable shooter that does the Dreamcast proud as a great arcade blaster, and visually pushes the unit with an impressive display of explosions and particles. It might be a last gen system, but GRev show all the wannabe shooters on next gen hardware just how a great shooter should be made.
