Play Magazine
This is a short, steely, hard as f--k arcade shooter of the highest order... The graphics are some of the best I've ever seen on Dreamcast, and the soundtrack is insanely great. [Nov 2002, p.83]

Gamestyle
Ikaruga is THE paradigm for shoot’em ups. To the regular people out there, Ikaruga is an awe-inspiring and extremely challenging videogame for which no review can do justice.

Fans of space shooters owe themselves the opportunity to play Ikaruga, a game that was designed both to impress their sensibilities and to challenge every ounce of their being.

Although the GameCube version is already out, I would recommend Treasure's Dreamcast version. With "Radiant Silvergun" going for 200 bucks on eBay and the Dreamcast progressively fading off into the annals of gaming history, Ikaruga has every chance of becoming a valuable rarity.

XenGamers
Ikaruga's unique energy absorption/release and chain-combo bonus systems provide for more in-depth gameplay than many shooters on the market. However, we didn't find it to be a very compelling experience on the small screen.

Systel C. gave it a10:
Only 5 levels, but it's not like you can make it through the first in an hour XD It's insanely difficult, but that's what gamers need these days, something to challenge them. Anywho: Graphics: Easy 10, everythings very well rendered and clean, and the boss explosions look amazing. Sound: Also 10. Lots of neato sound effects and an incredible soundtrack. So good, I downloaded it so I could listen while not playing. Controls: 10-Easy to learn, really responsive. As bullet hell games should be. Story: Deep 10. The best I've seen from a bullet hell game, and it's a really "spiritule" game, each level being like a human transfiguration. Look on the internet for the story, it's very deep. The manual just explains the physical of what's happening. Overall-10.

SYC gave it a10:
Brilliant design, feverishly addictive gameplay and incredible depth makes for not just the greatest shooter I've ever played, but my personal favorite game of all time. The work of sheer genius.

Hugues B. gave it a10:
Even after 40 hours of gameplay I really love the gamestyle, general concept, colors, design, fluidity, soundtrack and ending. I great game on a great system.

Fighter17 gave it a 9:
This game is short, but one famous shoot 'em up. A must have.

Bob B. gave it a 10:
I never post online, but let me just say this, the fact that the ps2 is still going strong and the dc is long dead is a huge disgrace to the whole gaming world. take a look at rez, virtua tennis, 100's of other crappy ports to prove it. dreamcast graphics are still the best as evidenced by this game, only system that might have it beat even today is the gamecube. unless you go for that crappy pc-game xbox look. peace and long live the greatest video game system ever created.

Sebastian (Hunter) M. gave it a 9:
Dudes it's the best shooter i have ever played, who said thet Dreamcast is dead ?? Now i have get Borderdown. There are doming next two games like this. There is only on word that will say everything AWESOME !!!!!!

REIROM gave it a 7:
