Ever wonder what are the best-selling games ever for all platforms? I'm not sure how accurate is this list, but here it is! :)

1) Super Mario Bros. (NES) - 40 Million
2) Tetris (Game Boy) - 33 Million
3) Super Mario Bros. 3 (NES) 18 Million
4) Super Mario World (SNES) - 17 Million
5) Super Mario Land (Game Boy) - 14 Million
6) Super Mario 64 (N64) - 11 Million
7) The Sims (PC) - 10 Million
8) Super Mario Bros. 2 (NES) - 10 Million
9) Grand Theft Auto: Vice City (PS2) - 8.5 Million
10) Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone (PS1) - 8 Million
11) GoldenEye (N64) - 8 Million
12) Donkey Kong Country (SNES) - 8 Million
13) Super Mario Kart (SNES) - 8 Million
14) Pokemon Red/Blue (Game Boy) - 8 Million
15) Half-Life (PC) - 8 Million
16) Tomb Raider II (PS1) - 8 Million
17) Final Fantasy VII (PS1) - 7.8 Million
18) Myst (PC) - 7 Million
19) Gran Turismo 3 (PS2) - 7 Million
20) Dragon Warrior VII (PS1) - 6 Million

I wonder if those 10 million units of The Sims include all the expansion packs.

If you know of a more recent figure for any game, let us know, so the list can be updated.

How about best-selling PC games of all-time? I'll take a shot at it.

1) The Sims - 10 million
2) Half-Life - 8 million
3) Myst - 7 million

Chessmaster - 4 million
DOOM - 2.9 million
Civilization III - 2 million
Quake - 1.8 million
Age of Mythology - 1 million
Neverwinter Nights - 1 million
Return to Castle Wolfenstein - 1 million
Deus Ex - 500,000
Halo - 500,000
The Secret of Monkey Island 2 - 500,000

I'm sure I'm missing some. What games am I missing? Also, are there more recent (higher) numbers for any of the above?

RollerCoaster Tycoon should be up there, but I haven't seen a sales figure.

Jeez! The Sims franchise has sold 24 million units as of February 2003. I believe that includes the original The Sims on PC, all the expansions on PC, The Sims Online, and all the console versions.

The Sims franchise has shipped over 24 million units, including more than eight million units of the core product, The Sims.

Since there are 8 million of the "core product" in February 2003, I'll assume the 10 million now does not include expansion packs. The Sims on PC including all the expansions on PC could be close to 20 million.

Damn if you say they sold for an average of $30.00, they would of made $600.000.000.00... Not to shabby :)

Chairman, do you know how many units Microsoft's Flight Simulator franchise has sold?

Edit: I did some looking on my own.

By 1981 Flight Simulator was reportedly the best selling title for the Apple. By the end of 1997 Microsoft claimed to have sold not less than 10 million copies of all versions of FS, making it the best sold software title in the entertainment sector. And in 2000 Microsoft Flight Simulator was taken up in the Guinness Book of Records with 21 million copies sold per June 1999.

Whoa. Is that true? Can anyone find any recent numbers?

Wow, this is really enlightening.

Good guess with GTA. Only a few behind.
But man I never would have guessed Tetris did that well.
I had tetris on the original GB. But it was pre-owned.

**That many people bought it new? Wow... I wonder if it's still selling?**

The biggest joke on the list is Tomb Raider 2 - the original is now forgotten somewhat but I remember it as being one of the most immersing game experiences I ever had. The sequel was a huge and major joke. Too bad its the one in the series that sold the most copies.

and people wonder why Nintendo keeps remaking Mario games eh?

funny that you posted this list, cause I saw a list on penny-arcade forum of the top selling console games in the US in the past 9 years

5.94 N64 Super Mario 64
5.81 PS2 Grand Theft Auto: Vice City
5.24 PS2 Grand Theft Auto 3
5.10 GBC Pokemon Yellow
5.02 GBC Pokemon Blue
5.01 N64 Goldeneye 007
4.83 GBC Pokemon Red
4.80 N64 Mario Kart 64
3.85 GBC Pokemon Gold
3.75 GBC Pokemon Silver
3.57 N64 Legend of Zelda: The Ocarina of Time

numbers in millions..I would post the link, but it is on the PA forum, and the guy who posted it was posting from another forum..the numbers do look pretty accurate for US.

What makes it funny was as soon as I started talking to the people who I talk to on irc people wondered about all time and the page you posted was what I was looking at heh

Anyway, as for big PC games.

Riven - sequal to Myst, must have had some hype and I am sure I saw figures over a million for it sold a lot when it was released

Sim City - I know I saw this selling well..though this is an older game so hard to compare to these newer ones with more gamers.

King's Quest series - Before the Sims came out, I know I saw sierra bosting about how this series was the highest selling series of all time..as for figures? not sure..the number I remember was 20 million for the series..but I will try to find more info

Age of Empires - now I know MS is behind it..but it must have done well to make 2 more games plus a couple of expansions.

You did miss some obvious ones like:

Diablo, Diablo 2, Starcraft - I am sure the other blizzard games did well like WC3.

GTA3 and GTA:VC?

I will try to think of others..I am sure Westwood stuff should be up there too.
