How many they are
Presently,
the number of indians in the world is estimated at 5 thousand different
peoples, amouting to around 350 million people. In Brazil, until the
mid 70's, indians were believed to be inevitably forced to disappear.
In the 80's, a tendency to revert the population growth was observed
and, since then, the indian population in the country has been growing
constantly, pointing out to an increase in population concerning most
part of these peoples.
According to the ISA, the present 227 indian peoples in Brazil add
up to around 600 thousand people, which corresponds roughly to 0,2%
of the country's total population. However, this point is still subjected
to different estimates.
