SCAM ALERT!
Have you received an "Urgent Notice" about your home loan with Fort Knox Federal Credit Union?
One of our members recently received an "Urgent Notice". It tells him among other things that action needs to be taken to "protect his home loan". Many benefits are available with this loan to include death benefit, unemployment waiver, level premiums, etc. He must complete a "no cost or obligation" form with personal information (D.O.B., phone numbers, etc.) Again, this is a scam!

Beware: The IRS reports that its' name and logo are being fraudulently used via all media sources (internet, phone, text, messaging) to obtain sensitive personal financial information. Don't bite! The IRS does not ask for personal identifying or financial information via unsolicited e-mail, telephone calls or text messaging.
Account Overdraft Information
Common sense says that your spending is limited to the amount you have in your checking account. But with Overdraft protection plans, you can keep spending and may not even know you've overdrawn your account.
The biggest risk of using a check card, also called a debit card, is that consumers can overdraw their checking accounts. And since most banks provide "convenience" overdraft protection - which is basically a high-interest loan to cover the shortfall in the account - a consumer who's trying to manage money responsibly could get hit with a fee of around $35.
8 Tips for Using Check Cards
1- Keep receipts and note debits in checking register.
2- Check account balance frequently either online or through the bank to avoid overdraft.
3- Beware of bank overdraft policies and fees. Customers can decline the bank's "convenience" coverage for overdraft, which could cost high fees if they overdraw the accounts. Instead, sign up for overdraft protection that is covered by a savings account.
4- Most check cards now have "zero liability" protection that exceeds what the federal law call for, so security is a lesser issue. Still, consumers should check with their banks to see how debit transactions are processed. Only those going through the Discover, MasterCard, or Visa networks may be covered by zero liability.
5- PIN transactions are more secure than signature transactions, although most don't qualify for reward points.
6- If consumers pay off their credit card balances each month, they're better off using a credit card with rewards for purchases than a debit card or check card.
7- Find out what the bank's daily limit for usage is for your checking account.
8- If a cardholder's balance is low, it's best not to use debit for purchases such as gas, where a hold of at least $50 will be placed on the card.

Action May Be Required

Fiserv EFT recently learned of a phishing scam that has resulted in confirmed fraud. The reported cases have involved a fraudulent email that appeared to be sent from the cardholder’s financial institution. The email instructs the recipient to complete a survey to receive $50.00.

Upon completing the survey, a transaction, typically exceeding $1,000.00, was submitted from WESTERN UNION.COM to the cardholder’s account. The initial transaction was denied; however, a subsequent attempt typically ranging from $200.00 to $800.00 was approved. In addition, the criminals may have other personal information about the cardholders and have fraudulently enrolled them in Verified by Visa or MasterCard SecureCode, as evidenced by $1.00 authorization transactions.

We recommend that you review your daily activity reports for any unusual activity, including Western Union internet-based transactions. If fraud is suspected, please take any appropriate action to protect your cardholders. Most importantly, advise your cardholders to review card activity and report any suspected fraud to you. Be sure to remind your cardholders to never reply to emails requesting their financial information.

Should additional information become available, we will provide you with updates. If you have questions, please call 1-800-888-0085 and ask for Risk Management.
