PS3 Folding@Home Hits 1M Users

SCEA's Playstation 3 Folding@home project, which went live back on March 22, recently topped one million user, meaning that about 3,000 PS3 users have registered for Folding@home a day since they software went live on the console.

"Since partnering with SCEI, we have seen our research capabilities increase by leaps and bounds through the continued participation of Folding@home users," said Vijay Pande, Associate Professor of Chemistry at Stanford University and Folding@home project lead. "Now we have over one million PS3 users registered for Folding@home, allowing us to address questions previously considered impossible to tackle computationally, with the goal of finding cures to some of the world's most life-threatening diseases. We are grateful for the extraordinary worldwide participation by PS3 and PC users around the globe."

Thanks to all of those PS3 owners willing to tie their console to the network, and pay the resulting electric bill, PS3 users make up about 74 percent of the total teraflop computing power of the Folding@home project.

Well done Sony, well done. Oh, speaking of well done, Team Kotaku is currently ranked number 106 at folding@home. If you haven't signed up (for Folding@home) and own a PS3, you really should.

ARE... ARE YOU VIC TAYBACK? Rumor

Dead Rising 2 Rumored To Be In The Works, But Not At Capcom

The latest issue of EGM should be hitting subscriber mailboxes any day now, but 1UP has an early look at the month's rumor round up from the enigmatic Quarterman. One of the biggest unconfirmed stories is that Capcom is indeed readying a sequel to Xbox 360 zombie fest Dead Rising. A Western developer is rumored to have taken the development reins, one based in the Los Angeles area. Capcom has certainly warmed up to developers outside of Japan, as development on Okami, Bionic Commando and Super Street Fighter II Turbo HD Remix has been outsourced westward.

Other enticing rumor tidbits: a forthcoming announcement from Team Ico, plus ports of Everyday Shooter and God of War: Chains of Olympus. I'm going to check the mailbox one more time. Things often get jammed in there. *checks* Damn it!!

The Super Mario Galaxy Miracle

Those of you who have been following the site regularly probably know that my wife isn't a gamer. In fact she's slightly an anti-gamer, but she puts up with me. She doesn't, however, ever have any interest in playing games, or watching myself or my son play games, or even talking about games. So we don't, at least around her. And it's really not a big deal. I have plenty of other things going on in my life, so gaming doesn't have to be a part of every bit of it.

Over the weekend Tristan and I decided to play through more of Super Mario Galaxy. About 30 minutes into our session, my wife wandered down to fix herself a drink at the bar. Then she sort of wandered over to the couch where we were sitting to play. Then she sat down!

What the hell? I thought, but tried not to show my surprise. The last thing I wanted to do was have her walk off.

First Screens Of Civilization Revolution For Nintendo DS

Before Sid Meier goes massively multiplayer, he and the rest of the Civ team are bringing the Civilization series to the non-PC gaming masses. While the Wii version looks to have stalled, the Nintendo DS version is looking like a perfect it. 2K Games released a handful of new screens for the portable version of Sid Meier's Civilization Revolution and a singular piece of shiny artwork. This is the kind of handheld strategy gaming we can get behind.

Pursuit Force: Extreme Justice Impressions

I played through a sizable chunk of Pursuit Force: Extreme Justice over the past week or so, and I was surprised to find that I sorta liked it. I was surprised because I loathed the first game, it seemed too button mashy for me and I didn't feel like all the button slapping resulted in a big enough pay-off to make it worthwhile.

Extreme Justice still has you slogging away at the buttons, but they've mixed up the missions enough to make it seem worthwhile, at least, a bit for me.

This latest version includes some new vehicles and weapons as well as better graphics, which help with the pay-off quite a bit. It also comes with a new multiplayer mode that includes four types of play, one of which is on foot.

For the uninitiated, Pursuit Force, both of them, is really about leaping from one car to the other. Sure there's the driving, and the shooting, but what makes the game is the ability to jump onto the hood of a moving car or truck or what have you.

Gearbox Hints At Something Huge

The president of Gearbox Software, Randy Pitchford, has already put the hype train into motion for their next unannounced title today, seeking a senior artist for a project so massive that "when you find out what this is, you'll likely agree that I can't oversell this one." A currently open job listing at the Gearbox official site reads "trust us, it's huge", pointing to a "megaton" AAA release. So what are they working on? more »

NVIDIA Buying AGEIA for Bouncy PhysX Tech

NVIDIA today confirmed rumblings that they were looking to buy physics-centric AGEIA Technologies. NVIDIA said today that an agreement to acquire the industry leaders in gaming physics, though the acquisition still remains subject to some closing conditions.

More details about the deal will shake out during NVIDIA's upcoming quarterly conference call, set for Feb. 13.

While AGEIA appears to continue to struggle breaking into the mainstream PC market, they've made significant in-roads into the console market with 140 PhysX-based games shipping or in development on the Playstation 3, Xbox 360, Wii and PC. The company has more than 10,000 registered and active users of their PhysX software development kit as well.

"NVIDIA is the perfect fit for us. They have the world's best parallel computing technology and are the thought leaders in GPUs and gaming. We are united by a common culture based on a passion for innovating and driving the consumer experience," said Manju Hegde, co-founder and CEO of AGEIA.

Full release on the jump. I wonder if NVIDIA would try to come up with a way to incorporate the PhysX engine into a graphics card, instead of requiring two pieces of hardware? Maybe that's not possible, actually.

GameSpot Loses One More Editor

Ryan Davis, an associate editor, experienced reviewer and nearly 8-year GameSpot veteran, has become the latest to quit in the wake of former editorial director Jeff Gerstmann's termination. GameDaily.biz reports today that it has confirmed with new GameSpot editor in chief Ricardo Torres that Davis will follow Frank Provo and Alex Navarro as the latest casualty to the site's editorial staff. News of the most recent resignation comes two months to the day that we warned of a mass walkout at the CNet Networks owned site.

Gerstmann and Davis appeared to have been close cohorts, with the pair performing as the musical outfit Suburban All-Stars. Davis wrote in his GameSpot blog within days of Gerstmann's firing that "I would not be in the video game business at all were it not for Jeff Gerstmann," adding that the controversial termination "absolutely breaks my heart" and signaled "the end of an era for both GameSpot and myself."

Penny Arcade Appears in Newspaper Crossword

Gabe pointed out late last week that the webcomic duo appeared in the January 30, New York Sun crossword puzzle. The one up there, to be specific. Twelve down reads:

"Tycho's pal in the webcomic 'Penny Arcade' (4 letters)."

I can't think of any honor greater than being deemed crossword puzzle material.

PixelJunk Monsters Impressions

While it's been released to the masses for some time now, I feel compelled to share my thoughts on Q-Games' PixelJunk Monsters, the tower defense title for the PS3. Because while I'd downloaded it hoping for a PS3ized version of the acclaimed Desktop Tower Defense, I received a game that was completely different.

And it's sort of been rocking my world.

A Duo Of Twisted Metal Head On: Extra Twisted Edition Clips

While we weren't so excited about Twisted Metal Head On: Extra Twisted (Extra Long Name) Edition for PS2 when it was announced—despite our love for the series, we'd played the game once before—we can't help but to get a little excited when watching clips of the new version in motion. They makes us wonder why we ever put down the PSP version in the first place, a game that was closer to the heart of the fanboy-acclaimed Twisted Metal 2 than any other in the franchise. Enjoy this look at Moscow and a peak at Egypt after the jump.

Pure Energy: A Critical Look At Energy Drinks

The gaming industry is growing by leaps and bounds every year, and as more and more people enter the gaming community, more and more companies are trying to find a way to capitalize on the exploding demographic. Furniture companies start producing gaming chairs, electronics manufacturers add high-definition gaming to their feature lists - I've even seen local apartment complexes advertising gamer-friendly DSL on signs outside their property. With brands like Mountain Dew already sharing a strong association with gamer culture, it makes sense that the energy drink industry would target our hobby in a big way. Game harder, faster, and longer with the help of various sugars and herbs in a tiny tin can - but which tiny tin can is the best? I took a look at thirteen of the more popular brands in my area to determine which energy drink packs the most kick without making you sick to your stomach.

Where Did The Neat DS Drawing Games Go?

MTV Multiplayer asks a pretty good question to Nintendo DS developers: where the hell did all those neat sketching games go? You know what they mean, games that required drawing to play, games like Pac-Pix or Kirby Canvas Curse. After interviewing various people in the industry, Vicarious Visions CEO Karthik Bala gave the story straight (you know that company as the developer behind many Activision franchises on the platform):

DMC4 Takes 20 Minutes To Install, Worth It?

While most PS3 owners will be tempted to install Devil May Cry 4 to their hard drive, it's worth asking if there's much of a benefit. Why? The full 5GB install will take over 20 minutes. But the load times really aren't much faster than playing off of the disc, only gaining about a second in most situations over the 360 disc version.

However, without PS3 to PS3 comparisons we may be discounting the possibility that the Xbox 360 version has better disc load times than the PS3 version, so there could still be a considerable loading benefit for PS3 owners. Even for 2 second savings, I'd leave the game installing while I did something else.
