Rural Economy

The well-being of rural and small town America depends on the availability of good-paying jobs, access to critical services, strong communities, and a healthy natural environment. ERS research focuses on socioeconomic change and diversity in rural areas and provides information to Federal, State, and local policymakers to help enhance the quality of life and well-being of rural Americans.

Spotlights

Low-Skill Employment and the Changing Economy of Rural America—This report describes trends in rural low-skill employment and their impact on the rural workforce. The decline in the low-skill share of employment affects the well-being of rural workers and the economic development of small towns across America.

Recreation, Tourism, and Rural Well-Being—This study assesses the effect of recreation and tourism development on socioeconomic conditions in rural recreation counties. The findings imply that recreation and tourism development contributes to rural well-being, increasing local employment, wage levels, and income, reducing poverty, and improving education and health.
