Food Sector

The U.S. food sector is a complex network of food processors and food marketing industries that link farmers to consumers—wholesalers, retailers, and foodservice establishments. ERS develops data describing the economic health and dynamics of the food sector. ERS research analyzes the causes of structural change in the food sector and its impact on food markets and consumers.


Spotlights

Current Issues in Economics of Food Markets—These reports synthesize economic analyses of the complex relationships in food markets of interest to officials responsible for public policy, industry decisionmakers, and researchers.

CPI for Food Forecasts—ERS forecasts the Consumer Price Index (CPI) for food for the upcoming 12 to 18 months. The forecasts project food price changes and are updated monthly as conditions in the food market change. There is also a discussion of the outlook for prices for individual food items in 2006.
