Azrael and Batgirl
went into Joker's territory to evacuate all the civilians. They
ran into some of his gang, but made short work of them. After
they thought they had everyone out, they heard of another child
still left. The girl had been captured by Joker. They walked
right up to Joker, thinking he was a henchman dressed as his
boss, and got the girl to safety. |

Batgirl and Azrael
reported back to Oracle. She had them start looking for the
infants that Joker had allegedly began capturing. She also
introduced them to Christmas. At Camp Lex, they found dolls
decorating a Christmas tree wired with explosives. It exploded,
but Azrael was able to keep Batgirl and Mercy safe from the
blast. He was taken to Dr. Thompkins' clinic, where he
recovered. |

Jean Paul wandered
around New Gotham in the snow and happened upon some men beating
a "DeeZee." Without the help of Azrael, Jean Paul was
also victimized. When the attackers left, he realized the other
man was his old friend, Dr. Brian Bryan. Neither with direction,
they went to Dr. Leslie Thompkins, who offered to help them
start up a clinic. Batman appeared - he'd purchased an abandoned
church for them and requested that Azrael not retire fully. The
men who'd attacked them followed Brian back into the church.
Azrael scared them off. |

Brian brought in
his new patient, Nick Scratch. Jean Paul attacked him. Brian was
able to break them up; Scratch knew Jean Paul was Azrael. Brian
was convinced that Scratch was reforming. He wasn't. That night,
Azrael ran into Huntress. Together, they stopped a mob of angry
"quakies." When he returned home, Scratch gave Azrael
some tea that knocked him out. When Jean Paul and Brian
awakened, Harold was there helping out. The Quakies, secretly
headed by Scratch, attacked the church. Jean Paul got in
costume, but it wasn't his new one - Scratch had switched it
with a replica of his original garb. A man was killed in the
ruckus. |

Azrael attacked
Huntress when she asked him to call Batman. With her down, he
left. At the Clock Tower, he once again faced off against
Huntress. Police arrived during their fight; each escaped.
Huntress spoke with Oracle. She called Dr. Leslie Thompkins.
Azrael didn't take Leslie's advice. Batman showed up at the
Clock Tower and told Huntress to go home. |

Batman questioned
Brian Bryan. Harold "scratched" a table. Batman
learned that Brian and Jean Paul had been drugged - Nick Scratch
had killed the man. Azrael decided he was a killer - that's what
he was born to be. He found Scratch and almost killed him, but
was unable to finish the job. Back at the church, Batman and
Harold cleared Jean Paul. He went to Dr. Thompkins and burned
his costume. The police found the body of a junkie that had
attacked Jean Paul. |

A month after Jean
Paul burned his Azrael costume, Dr. Leslie Thompkins and Brian
Bryan gave him a birthday celebration. Lilhy, after finding a
sect of the Order of St. Dumas in Asia, returned to Gotham City
with a new Azrael. Batman told Jean Paul that his mother may
have survived the Order. |

Oracle spoke with
Jean Paul and Batman about what she'd found in the book (lost by
Lilhy) - the last egg donor was set free by an dissenter of the
Order. Lilhy and her Azrael killed two Gotham City policemen
while looking for her book. Jean Paul bade Bryan farewell and
apologized for not being able to be there when their clinic
opened. He boarded a chartered jet to search out his mother. The
new Azrael snuck aboard the plane and killed the two pilots in
flight. Neither survivor (Azrael and Jean Paul) able to fly,
they crashed into the desert. |

Crawling out of
the burning plane, Jean Paul was greeted by Nomoz. The could not
rescue the Azrael before the plane exploded. They were soon
captured by a mercenary army located near the former home of the
Order of St. Dumas. Their leader, General McGog, took them out
to be executed, but the other Azrael attacked. Jean Paul got
into costume and offered the man friendship. When he refused,
Jean Paul beat him down. A woman who could have been Jean Paul's
mother was killed in the shootout. |

Azrael (Jean Paul)
had to defeat the other Azrael a second time. Nomoz got him out
of his costume so he'd be less inclined to attack again. After
burying the woman, the two Azraels, Nomoz, and General McGog
headed toward the Order of St. Dumas' former home. Working
together, the two Azraels defeated a team of McGog's men, who
were trying to rescue their leader. After the battle, Azrael
disappeared. Nomoz flew them (in their captured helicopter) to
civilization, where McGog was set free. |

Thompkins asked Jean Paul if he (not Azrael) could find her
brother, a missionary missing in the desert that he'd just
returned from. Jean Paul located General Magog and learned that
the other Azrael was loose - he'd attacked three of Magog's men.
It was believed that another man was helping him. Jean Paul was
given a driver and a Jeep. En route to their destination, they
struck a land mine. |

driver awakened tied up. The Azrael and his new keeper killed
some men who were buying medical supplies from them. Jean Paul
soon realized his captor was Jeremiah Thompkins. Azrael killed
the driver and pursued Jean Paul. |
