A confused Jean
Paul Valley walked the streets of Gotham, not knowing his true
identity. He had lapses, remembering being Azrael and Batman as
he fought off a group of muggers. Later that night, the muggers
set fire to the homeless shelter in which he was staying. |

Batman saved Jean
Paul from the flames that had engulfed his former home. He gave
the once-Batman some money, his Azrael costume, a map, and
information on the Order of St. Dumas. Jean Paul asked Brian
Bryan, a homeless friend who was once a psychiatrist, to
accompany him. The Order was training a new Azrael. They soon
learned of Jean Paul's arrival and sent assassins for him. |

Jean Paul escaped
his attacker, the Azrael in training. He found the ice castle -
the headquarters of the Order of St. Dumas. He was greeted by
Sister Lilhy and Brother Rollo. He asked to learn more about the
system and it was refused to him. Sister Lilhy told him she
would help his quest for knowledge if he would kill Brother
Rollo. He began his attack, but Rollo had foreknowledge of the
event - the new Azrael was waiting for him. |

Jean Paul defeated
Azrael, letting him fall from the castle. Brother Rollo sent his
acolytes to kill the blasphemous Jean Paul and Lilhy. Azrael got
Lilhy and his friend Brian safely into a subterranean river. |

and Brian escaped and contacted Oracle. They made way for Mobari
to seek the teachers of the system. Ra's al Ghul learned they'd
arrived near his territory. His people captured them. |

Ra's al Ghul and
Talia welcomed their "guests." Lilhy was overwhelmed -
she'd never journeyed outside the castle walls before. The
Demon's Head sent three assassins for Azrael, they were all
defeated. When Brian fell from his window trying to avoid the
battle, he was revived in the Lazarus Pit. Jean Paul turned down
all of Ra's al Ghul's offers and set out on his way again. |

Tim, Alfred, and
Lady Shiva were all on hand at a karate championship when a man
in the Az-Bat costume came in seeking challengers. Tim phone
Batman, but he was busy with the Ratcatcher and Cat-Man. Batman
arrived and snatched up the Az-Bat (who was actually the Azrael
Jean Paul had fought at the Ice Castle). Batman spared him. |

sleeping, talking, etc.). Alfred got Jean Paul back to his
