ABC News Programs

AM

AM is ABC Radio's flagship current affairs program. For 40 years AM has been setting the day's news agenda with concise reports and analysis from journalists around Australia and around the world. The team puts together editions at 6:05am on Local Radio, 7am on Radio National and 8am on Local Radio; plus a special Perth edition at 8am W.A. time. There are AM podcasts of the full program or individual story items, as well as MP3s and program transcripts.

Asia Pacific and Asia Pacific Business

Keeping you up to date with what's happening in our region, Radio Australia’s Asia Pacific brings you the latest coverage and analysis on what's making headlines throughout Asia and the South Pacific. With reports from across the region, Asia-Pacific Business is a weekly round up of economic conditions, regulatory changes, mergers and acquisitions, and the pitfalls and opportunities of doing business in new markets. Podcasts, MP3s and webfeeds are all available. Asia Pacific is on Radio Australia, Monday to Friday at 8pm and 11pm AEST and at various other times internationally. Asia-Pacific Business is on at 4.15pm AEST and at various other times internationally.

Asia Pacific Focus

Asia Pacific Focus is broadcast on weekdays across the region on the international TV network, Australia Network. The program is presented by Edmond Roy and covers world events with an emphasis on the Asia Pacific region. It provides quality analysis and features interviews with the region’s decision makers. On Sundays, Asia Pacific Focus is presented by Helen Vatsikopoulos and is broadcast on ABC TV at 11am and on ABC 2 on Mondays at 6am.

Australian Story

Australian Story is broadcast on Mondays at 8pm, and repeated on Saturdays at 12:30pm on ABC TV and on ABC2 on Thursdays at 9pm and Saturdays at 8pm. Stories are 'narrated' by the subjects themselves. The program aims to present a varied and contrasting picture of contemporary Australia and Australians from many different perspectives and to contribute to the wider spectrum of coverage of issues and individuals. There are broadband specials with extended footage and interviews, as well as program transcripts.

Australia Wide

Each weekday Australia Wide gathers stories from all over Australia. The ABC’s extensive network of program-makers are uniquely placed to bring to a national audience the people and stories from their part of Australia. There are also stories from independent film makers chosen from around the country. Following the success of the Video Lives competition run by ABC2 in 2005 and another team of film-makers in 2006, five new budding film-makers have been given their own camera kits this year. The program follows their lives as they make a regular video diary, from a very personal view, of the people and events they encounter. Each weekday has a theme, with environment, young people living outside cities, arts and sport, all being examined. Australia Wide is on ABC2 Monday to Friday at 4pm and repeated at 7pm and 7.30am.

Background Briefing

Background Briefing is Radio National's agenda-setting current affairs radio documentary program. It varies from week to week in style and content, sometimes doing straight investigative journalism, sometimes exploring important ideas or social issues with an ‘on-the-road’ documentary style. You will find profiles of politicians, analysis of behind-the-scenes issues that shape society, and sometimes an exploration of an idea. The program is on ABC Radio National on Sundays at 9am and repeated on Tuesdays at 7pm. Podcasts of the programs and RSS feeds are available.

Behind the News

Informing and entertaining Australian school children for more than 30 years, Behind the News is a high-energy fun way for upper primary and secondary students to learn about current issues and events in their world. The program explains the big news events of the week and provides an engaging way for children to learn about what is happening in Australia and the world. The website is packed with kids’ activities, related to each weekly program, as well as broadband versions of the last four weeks of the program. There is also an extensive teachers’ kit available online, to assist with the activities and tips on how to expand on the issues dealt with in the program. There is a "Your News" section, where students can produce their own news stories and send them into the program. Behind the News is on Tuesdays at 10:00am on ABC TV and repeated on Wednesdays at 10:30am. The program is also repeated on ABC2 on Wednesdays at 9:00am and 5:30pm.

Correspondents Report

Correspondents Report, broadcast on Radio National every Sunday morning at 8:05am, has built up a solid reputation as one of the most authoritative sources of international news analysis on Australian radio. The program provides a unique insight into the developments shaping our world, and reveals the sharp observation of some of the ABC's most experienced correspondents. As well as covering major stories at a level of detail not always possible during the week, it gives ABC correspondents the opportunity to reflect on the societies and cultures in which they're based.

Foreign Correspondent

Each week on ABC TV, Foreign Correspondent takes you on a journey to places where few others venture. Foreign Correspondent is Australia’s leading international current affairs program. In 15 years reporters, producers, camera operators and sound recordists have travelled to more than 160 countries and produced more than 1,400 reports. The program draws on the ABC’s extensive network of international correspondents and a Sydney-based reporting and production team. The program is on ABC TV on Tuesdays at 9.20pm and repeated on Saturdays at 1pm and on ABC2 on Thursdays at 9.30pm and Fridays at 8am.

Four Corners

Four Corners is Australia's premier television current affairs program. It has been part of the national story since August 1961, exposing scandals, triggering inquiries, firing debate, confronting taboos and interpreting fads, trends and sub-cultures. Its consistently high standards of journalism and film-making have earned international recognition and an array of Walkleys, Logies and other national awards. Four Corners has a series of special broadband editions with extended analysis and extra background information and resources. Four Corners is on ABC TV on Mondays at 8.30pm and repeated on Wednesdays at 11.35pm and on ABC2 on Wednesdays at 9.30pm and 8am on Thursdays.

Inside Business

Each Sunday on ABC TV, Inside Business provides news and analysis from the corporate world around Australia. Presented by Alan Kohler, one of Australia's leading financial journalists, the program combines interviews with newsmakers and examination of the issues making waves each week, with hard business news stories. Inside Business is on ABC TV at 10am on Sundays and on ABC 2 Mondays at 7.30am. You can watch the broadband versions of the features stories, as well as read program transcripts online.

Insiders

Presented by Barrie Cassidy, Insiders is a fast-moving treatment of national affairs with interviews, discussion, and analysis. Each week the program brings together the experience and insights of leading political commentators and other contributors representing a wide range of opinions. Insiders also gives Australians a chance to air their views on problems or issues that affect them in a special segment called ‘Your Shout’. Podcasts are available and you can watch the broadband versions, as well as read program transcripts. The program in on ABC TV on Sundays at 9am and on ABC2 on Mondays at 6.30am.

Landline

Landline is Australia's national rural issues program and is presented by Sally Sara. The full hour of Landline can be seen on Sundays at noon on ABC TV and is repeated the following Monday at 11am. Packed with all the latest rural news and what’s happening on the markets, the program provides specialist reporting on regional and rural issues. There is ‘Landline Video News’ and broadband versions of feature stories. Landline can also be seen on ABC2 on Sundays at 5pm.

Lateline

Lateline is a unique nightly news analysis program bringing you up-to-the-minute coverage of Australian and international news and events. Presented by Tony Jones, one of Australia's most experienced and respected journalists, the program is a provocative, challenging and intelligent window on today's world. Lateline engages the foremost experts or commentators - wherever in the world they may be - to bring you penetrating insights from a range of perspectives. Vodcasts of the program are available, as well as broadband video and program transcripts. Lateline is on ABC TV every weeknight at 10.30pm and can also be seen on ABC2 daily from Tuesday to Saturday at 6.30am. On Friday nights the program is presented by Virginia Trioli.

Lateline Business

Hosted by business journalist Ali Moore, this program forms the second half of a comprehensive late-night ABC news hour starting with Lateline. Lateline Business goes beyond the headlines and examines the issues that are driving the world of business and finance, and shaping the day ahead on the markets. Vodcasts of the program are available, as well as broadband video and program transcripts. Lateline Business is on at 11pm on ABC TV, Monday to Thursday, and on ABC2 from Tuesday to Friday at 7.05am.

Offsiders

Barrie Cassidy presents Offsiders on ABC TV each Sunday at 10:30am. The program also appears on ABC2 on Mondays at 8am. A show for anyone who's serious about sport, Offsiders provides challenging, insightful, humorous debates about the topic that dominates weekends - sport. Each week the program brings together the experience and insights of leading sporting commentators and other contributors representing a wide range of opinions. PM

PM is one of the grand institutions of Australian public broadcasting. For more than three decades, the program has been reporting on Australia and the world. It was the first Australian current affairs program to use journalists, not announcers or actors, as hosts. PM's timeslot at the end of the day has always given it a strong position from which to produce commentary and analysis on the political events of the moment, both in Canberra and the state capitals and provide the latest reports on the news events of the day. PM is hosted by Mark Colvin. There are PM podcasts of the full program or individual story items, as well as MP3s and program transcripts. PM is on Monday to Friday on Radio National after the 5 o’clock news and after the 6 o’clock news on Local Radio.

Stateline

Broadcast on ABC TV every Friday at 7:30pm, Stateline provides the best analysis of local politics and current issues that affect people in their own state or territory. There are eight local editions, with a presenter for each. All the programs have their own unique local style and also include colourful stories about people and places in their region. Stateline is repeated on ABC TV on Saturdays at midday, and on ABC2, different editions are repeated at 6am, 8am and 8.30am.

Sunday Profile

A national interview program, Sunday Profile focuses on key issues in Australia, providing listeners with detailed analysis of stories and background information and key interviews with major players. Presenter, Monica Attard talks to people in the news about the news. Monica has hosted the program since 2002. She took much of 2006 off to focus on her TV duties with Media Watch, but is back in 2007. Sunday Profile is on ABC Local Radio at 9.05pm and you can also listen to the program live online. MP3s and program transcripts are also available.

The 7.30 Report

The 7.30 Report is the ABC's national flagship TV current affairs program, compered by one of Australia's most respected and experienced journalists, Kerry O'Brien. Monday to Thursday, The 7.30 Report provides in-depth coverage and analysis of the major daily news events - both domestic and international. The program's imperative is to provide up-to-the minute, balanced coverage of the most important issues of the day whether they be political, economic, medical, environmental, social, sporting or cultural. Vodcasts and broadband versions of feature stories are available, as well as extended interview material and program transcripts.

The Midday Report

The Midday Report is on ABC TV Monday to Friday at noon. The program provides the latest national and international news and has a business focus, with the latest stock market information and what’s happening in the world of finance. The Midday Report is presented by Lisa Millar. A Perth edition of the program is also done each day.

The World Today

The World Today reports Australia's place in the world and the current international issues affecting us. Broadcast around the nation at lunchtime (after the midday news on local ABC Local Radio and Radio National, an hour later in rural Australia) The World Today keeps listeners up to date with the day’s news events, midway between its stable-mate programs AM and PM. When the program goes to air, significant news stories have developed here and overseas, particularly in Asia, the Pacific and North America. The World Today is presented by Eleanor Hall and can be heard live online. Podcasts, MP3s and transcripts are all available.
