About Flak Magazine

Flak Magazine was founded on the back of a placemat, in 1998, by James Norton, Nick Coleman and Benjamin Fowler. It has evolved into a noncomprehensive guide to everything. As of December 2007, it reaches more than 50,000 unique visitors a month.

The magazine exists to take the raw creativity of strong writers and temper it with good sense, good taste and the spirit of responsible journalism. Flak's got ethics. Flak's got moxie. And Flak's got an overwhelming, bulletproof love for high-quality content.

We invite anyone interested to join us, by contacting the people listed below, and/or by submitting a story pitch. No, really, pitch us before you write the piece — it just works better that way. Those who contribute five or more pieces that are published become "staff writers," for what that's worth, and remain on the masthead so long as their newest piece is less than six months old.

Flak staffers and alums have contributed to The New York Times, The Village Voice, Popular Science and ESPN.com, among others. They have appeared on NPR stations and Air America. They've accepted numerous book deals, debated legendarily cranky writers via email, served as body doubles for Sandra Bullock, written novels, worked for governors, hung out with Neal Pollack, done stand-up comedy and designed computer games. Among other zany hijinks.

Flak is hosted by Intelligent Hosting, a collection of lovely people who happen to provide Internet service. They can probably host you, too.
