League title. OK, that's reasonable.
District title. Now we might be starting to push the limit a little bit.
State title. Excuse me? Are you talking about us?
Last season, the Magic went out and achieved two of those goals, falling in the semifinals of the state tournament to league rival Villa Maria.
Now, it's a new season. And once again, the girls were watching Miller put the same goals on the board. Only this time, they know every one of those goals is possible.
"This time, we weren't staring at him like he's crazy," said Johnson, who was the starting point guard for the 28-3 Magic last season. "No one expected anything of us. So we just played it one game at a time and even though people are putting more pressure on us this year, I definitely think we can do it again."
Mount was the surprise of the Athletic Association of Catholic Academies last season, winning the league and District 1 titles with a starting lineup that consisted of four juniors and a sophomore. In fact, not one of the Magic's top seven players was a senior.
And while the team may have come within one victory of a trip to the state title game, the players know that they have an even better chance to get back there, considering all seven players are returning.
"Last year, we went in like we had nothing to lose," said senior center/forward Sarah McGorry. "This year, we're the targets. But we've had the opportunity to play with each other for three or four years. We're gonna play to the best of our ability."
Leading the Magic this year will be Johnson, a dangerous offensive player who also led the team in steals last season. Then there's the 6-foot McGorry, who is Mount's primary inside presence and can rebound with the best of them.
Junior Elle Hagedorn is as natural a scorer as you'll find and also the team's best defensive player. Filling out the starting lineup is Ryann Gallagher - the team's best weapon from 3-point range - and Jen Sabia. Miller plans to bring Claire Kueny and Alexa Buchanan off the bench to complete his seven-player rotation.
"As a coach in my 37 years, I have never had my top seven players all return," said Miller, who is a former head coach of La Salle women's basketball team. "That's pretty unheard of. With everyone back, it's natural for people to have expectations for you."
And while the Magic didn't even have high expectations for themselves at the start of the last season, by the time they reached the state playoffs, that was all out the window. Never did they expect to win both the league and district championships. All of a sudden, they were serious contenders for the state crown in the AAA classification.
That was until Villa came along in the fifth meeting of the season between the two squads. The first four meetings had all been close - decided by 10 points or less. This state semifinal game was not so close, as Villa crushed Mount by 32 points.
"It was horrible, one of the worst feelings in the world (after that game)," said Johnson, who was held to only two points in the contest. "It's not like we lost by one point in overtime - we lost by (more than) 20."
"We lost to a team that we knew we could beat," added Hagedorn, referring to the three wins the Magic had had over the Hurricanes during the year. "Now, it's kind of like motivation for this season. We know we have the potential to go far."
Mount has already opened the season with two lopsided victories - a 62-14 win over Coatesville last Friday and a 79-43 win over Lancaster McCaskey on Saturday. The Magic begin league play on Thursday at Villa Joseph Marie. They won't face Villa Maria until after the new year, when they travel to Malvern on Jan. 3. They will host the Hurricanes on Jan. 18.
Villa will be without star Julia Trogele, who is now a freshman at Penn State, but regardless, both dates are definitely circled on the Magic's calendar.
But this season isn't about reflecting on the past. Last season is over. The girls know that. All they need to do now is focus on the present and know that they will be contenders for the league and district crowns.
As for the state title?
"Whoa, let's not get ahead of ourselves," Hagedorn said. "We're aiming to win the league and the rest is just icing on the cake."
