Archeologist Sir Sidney Wignall's letter of March 26, 1975, letter to Spence In the late underwater archeologist Sir Sidney Wignal's letter to Spence of March 26, 1975, marked "Strickly Confidential," Wignal wrote "With reference to the Hunley. I would strongly advise you not to be seen visiting the site. It is possible that others might attempt to pre-empt you when they see where you are diving." Interestingly, several years later Wignal, who was then searching for John Paul Jones' ship (Bon Homme Richard), teamed up with Clive Cussler for NUMA's first expedition. Cussler had contacted Wignal only after Cussler learned from underwater archaeologist Peter Throckmorton that Wignal had already researched and defined a search area for the historic shipwreck. The NUMA expedition failed to locate the ship in that expedition, which was extremely limited in time when compared to all of the targets they were checking out. The following year, Cussler returned to Wignal's search area for another try, but this time without Wignal.

Chart (annotated section: showing ranges scaled off a plot of the government's 1865 location for the Housatonic) from June 7, 1976, edition of NOAA chart 11523 This was the chart Spence used in conjunction with his post Hunley discovery magnetometer work relating to the Housatonic. That was done partly to rule out any question that the wreckage he had tentatively (and correctly) identified as the Hunley was simply a boiler from the Housatonic. It was during this time period that he took bearings directly over the remains of the Housatonic and plotted them on a chart. These coordinates appear as "object" on a list of search points (all given in the form of longitude and latitude) comparing them by distance and direction with various charted positions of the Housatonic and with the snag "W.O." found by Captain O'Neal.

Copies of this annotated chart were given to Senator McConnell, SCIAA and the Attorney General's office prior to Cussler's location being disclosed to the State.

Chart (annotated section: shows rivit pattern of old Housatonic wreck buoy) November 24, 1979, edition of NOAA chart 11523 This unusual rivet pattern which was sketched in pencil from memory on this chart by Dr. Spence during a discussion he was having at the National Archives with Archivist John VanDerRoot on May 17, 1981. In an effort to record a time line for his discovery, Spence asked VanDerRoot to sign the chart and his signature is in pencil along with the date. The note in blue pen was added by Spence while compiling documents for placement in the affidavit. That annotation incorrectly notes the word "it" as being the snag (Housatonic's old wreck buoy). From a recent review of notes, it is clear that point "It" was a plot of a magnetic bearings and angles taken by Spence and Captain Jack Parker directly over the Hunley's location. A plot of the magnetic bearings taken by Spence the day he found the Hunley in 1970 were used as the coordinates of the center point of Spence's 1974 filing with the United States Army Corps of Engineers. To protect against looters, that center point was shifted slightly for the filing of Spence's salvage claim in Federal District Court. The center point on this chart is the one used in the court filing. The spot identified in Spence's notes as "object" is the wreck of the Housatonic. The point marked "W.O." is the snag shown in Spence's notes as "O'Neal." Both "W.O." and "O'Neal" are simply shortened forms of Captain Walter O'Neal's name. The snag has been tentatively identified by Spence as the remains of an iron buoy which once marked the wreck of the Housatonic.

Clearance from Eastern Sea Frontier, U.S. Navy, May 22, 1974, letter to Spence from Commander (Note: The Commander would not have given this clearance had Spence's map not been precise enough to show where Sea Research Society would be salvaging the Hunley.)

Clearance from U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, May 10, 1974, letter to Spence from District Engineer This clearance was furnished to Spence only after he complied with the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers' request that Sea Research Society pinpoint the Hunley's location on a map. The Corps was obviously satisfied with the degree of accuracy represented in Spence's map or they would not have issued the clearance.

Dr. Hugh Myrick's sworn affidavit of January 28, 1997 attesting that in 1994/1995, he, Dr. Steve Swavely, Mike Freeman, Pete Petrone, and several others were planning an expedition with Spence to photograph the Hunley, and that Spence had described it to him as located near the Housatonic, in 27' of water. He also says that Spence told his it was buried when he last checked the spot in 1979 (that last point is extremely important because it shows that Spence was not confusing it with the sunken buoy, as that object stuck two feet out of the sand in 1979).

Dr. Mark Newell's letter of January 23, 1997, to Spence (Newell page one, Newell page two), in which Newell writes of being told by his supervisor at SCIAA (the South Carolina Institute of Archaeology & Anthropology) "not to prepare any documents or memorandums that might lend credibility to your claim that you had discovered the CSS H.L. Hunley. I was told that to do so would result in the termination of my post." and that his supervisor's replacement "persisted in this policy, even to the extent of attempting to destroy extensive file box holdings on your work in general and the Hunley in particular." Dr. Newell was listed in NUMA's original press release on their "discovery" as the director of the project. Now that the Hunley has been raised and there is no need to keep the location secret and Newell credits Spence with the actual discovery, Newell agrees that what his team did was to rediscover the wreck. Some error, which would still be relatively small, would be due to the fact that the coordinates were scaled from a plot of magnetic bearings taken by Spence in 1970 from Captain Porcelli's vessel Miss Inah, which, although anchored near the Hunley, was not located directly over it. The center point is still close enough to the recovery site, to make it clear that Spence had definitely found the Hunley.)
