Del Toro Gets Chatty About Halo

Looks like director Guillermo Del Toro (Pan's Labyrinth, Blade II) likes him some Halo, and likes the inevitable prospect of a Halo movie:
It would have been beautiful and I must tell that's a... of anything in my life that I look back and wish it could have happened is that project, because it is such a powerful experience. People talk about it and say "it's ALIENS or it's a retread of this or that," I don't think so. I think there are angle to that game that are far more epic and far more complex as a cosmology than that. It's not just about grunts in space. It's much more than that. It's a whole epic.
He's right, and you know he's right because he knows better than anyone how to faithfully adapt a franchise for the big-screen. Look at Hellboy! So faithful. Especially the love-story. And we all know Halo isn't about guns, space and aliens. It's about love, politics and...a complex cosmology.

Custom Alyx Vance Figure

alyx.jpg Considering it's one of the most polished and well-loved sci-fi stories kicking around gaming today, it's a wonder Valve haven't cashed in by releasing some figures of the series' characters. Ah well. Until they come to their senses/sell out, you'll have to make your own from scratch, like Quasimodox has here. The bonus Lamar is a neat touch. More pics at the link below.

Santa.jpg Christmas

So What Stuffed Your Stocking This Year?

With Christmas now mostly done, regardless of where you live, it's time to take stock of the loot and booty you acquired during the day. And no, not the socks and/or jocks you picked up from your granny, we're talking games, and game-related paraphernalia. So, what'd you score? A console? Games? Accessories? Some cheesy Threadless shirt that's two sizes too small? All of the above? I can safely report that for the first time since 1988, I did not receive a single present related to the world of videogames. Not even a gift voucher! Must be getting old...

Xbox 360 Gets Its Own Devil May Cry 4 Afterthought Bundle

Xbox 360-only gamers coveting the recently announced PlayStation 3 bundle that packs in Capcom's Devil May Cry 4 in Japan can rest easy—you're getting your own barebones bundle, too!

No, there isn't some super cool Power Glove-esque Devil Bringer controller pack-in, nor is there a sweet limited Nero action figure bonus. Capcom couldn't even be bothered to throw in a t-shirt. It's just the console and the game. I suppose the custom cardboard box will appeal to some, but for 37,800 yen, I'd have expected at the very least a huggable Trish pillow.

Battlestar Galactica's Helo Tests Out the Xbox 360 Game

tahmoh2.jpg

By John Gaudiosi

VANCOUVER, BRITISH COLUMBIA--While the next season of the critically acclaimed sci-fi TV series, "Battlestar Galactica," won't air until 2008 on Sci-Fi, fans of the show have plenty to keep them busy this fall. There's the complete first season from Universal Studios Home Entertainment on HD-DVD as well as the new extended cut of the Battlestar Galactica Razor movie out on DVD. Game maker Blackdot has created a free online game, Raptor's Revenge, to tie into this new DVD release at www.battlestargalacticadvd.com. There's also Vivendi Games new Xbox Live Arcade downloadable high-definition Battlestar Galactica game.

Actor Tahmoh Penikett, who plays Lt. Karl C. "Helo" Agathon on the series, is the resident gamer of the cast. When he's not filming the series, he's playing his PSP or PlayStation 3. The actor got a chance to pilot the new Xbox 360 game on set and he took some time to talk about his gaming background, as well as his love of all things sci-fi.

Made to Order Pixel Art Beanies

Reader Lukas writes to point out that a friend of sorts has started a small label for headwear that now takes orders for custom-designed hats. The site uses a pixel-like pattern for creating the custom hats which are, Lukas says, very suitable for making retro-gaming themed hats. He had them make himself a custom Space Invaders cap which set him back $70.

It might be a bit too late to buy these as presents, but that doesn't stop you from just picking one up for yourself. If you're interested hit up the site below, but make sure to contact them directly at info [ at [ idolwear.ch if you want a custom pattern.

Kotaku Kristmas Kard, 'Still Not Banned'

Hmm...maybe we overdid it with the whole "K" for "Kotaku" theme, but we've put together a special holiday ecard just for our readers. Why? Clearly the internet is short of obnoxious electronic entertainment. And when Valve agreed to lend us the background of a certain very popular song from Portal, we just couldn't help ourselves...

So from the entire Kotaku staff, happy holidays and merry whatever you celebrate. And to Valve, thank-you...and we're very, very sorry.

Voices in order of butchery: Michael Fahey, Mark Wilson, Brian Crecente, Brian Crecente, Luke Plunkett.

Christmas Eve and Croquet

To: Luke
From: Crecente
Re:Cookies & Beer

Beer huh? In our house it was always cookies and eggnog, both of which were for Santa. If we were feeling especially generous we'd throw in a carrot for the reindeer, but no beer. I'm not sure how well they mix with cookies. But maybe that's just me.

We spent a relatively warm Christmas Eve in the back yard of the Crecente family home playing croquet with the family. Funny thing, before today I've never actually played the game of mallets and balls made famous, perhaps, by Alice in Wonderland. Sure I knew what it was, I even had a slight grasp of the rules. I think I may have, once or twice as a child, chased my brother around the very same yard with a large wooden mallet, screaming my fool head off, but I never sat down and played. It's a really fun game, especially if you have a really big yard and lots of people to play with. OK, that's my vote for Game of the Year: Classic Croquet.

Tomorrow is going to be super light because no one is really working. We do, however, have a little video holiday card Mark whipped up for our readers. I'm not sure if the end result means our readers were naughty or nice.

What Are You Playing This Holiday?

Some of you may have had your long weekends interrupted by work today, so I empathize. Believe me, I do. But with a scheduled holiday going on right now for many of us, we should have the opportunity to play loads of new games during our idle hours. Some of you may have already peaked through the wrapping on your Christmas gifts and know what you'll be playing this holiday and some of you may simply have strong ideas about what's under the tree. Me, I think there's a copy of Final Fantasy III waiting for me, but I can't be sure. Regardless, it promises to be a very nerdy Christmas for me, based on the contents of my wish list.

For those who already have it worked out, let us know in the comments what you'll be playing this holiday.

Update On The Status Of Chun-Li's Thighs In Street Fighter IV

You may have your reservations about the direction of Street Fighter IV. It's the first in the non-EX line of the series to make the jump to 3D. It's set between the events of Street Fighters two and three. The released screen shots have been met with mixed reactions. But one factor we needn't fret over is the integrity of Chinese fighter Chun Li's thighs. 1UP today published an interview with Daigo Ikeno—art director and character designer for SFIV—who assured fans that he won't be mucking with what makes the character so identifiable—thighs amazingly more voluminous than those of her male counterparts.

Ikeno explains "I certainly wouldn't dream of thickening up every female thigh in the game. I mean, characters who need big thighs will be graced with big thighs." The character designer, whose credits also include Street Fighter III, Devil May Cry and Darkstalkers, says working on the highly anticipated title is a "tremendous burden of responsibility" but that he's working hard to stay true to the game's iconic characters.

Readers may not be able to glean much in the way of new details on the next Street Fighter, but the Q&A; is definitely worth a read for anyone who is a fan of Ikeno's stuff.

Hey, Look, It's Another Threadless Video Game Shirt

The design community at Threadless has approved yet another video game themed design, this one based on classic block dropper Tetris. Actually, it could very well be based on Technos' Block Out, a three dimensional take on the genre that was a personal favorite during my arcade employment duties. Anyway, back on topic, the design "I Hate Packing" is ready for your buying pleasure with Threadless listing all sizes as having "plenty in stock." It's cute, as are all things Threadless.

The new multiplayer maps are ready for download and already playable on a number of servers, so there should be no problem finding a game. Plenty of screen shots are available at the official posting on the matter.

New Rock Band Downloadable Tracks Pop Up, Come Cheap

The newest batch of tracks for Rock Band has been announced by Harmonix, ushering in a less expensive, heavy on the modern pop-rock set of jams. Each will be priced to move at $0.99. The full track list, which may not be for everyone but should at least be applauded for bringing a shred of variety, is below.

"Attack" - 30 Seconds To Mars (from 2005's A Beautiful Lie)
"The Kill" - 30 Seconds To Mars (from 2005's A Beautiful Lie)
"Dirty Little Secret" - All-American Rejects (from 2005's Move Along)

Blizzard Beginning Developer Podcast

Picture%2030.png

Blizzard fanboys will rejoice today as the studio has announced a new developer video podcast that will start the first week of January. Concerning Starcraft 2 and Wrath of the Lich King, the podcast will include lots of dev interviews, fansite interaction and Q&A.; We know, we know. It's another podcast on a mountain of podcasts. But the news is exciting because Blizzard is traditionally extremely tight-lipped about their project development, offering us little more than beautiful CGI movies that even the Rosetta Stone, a case of beer and a weekend can't decipher to those specific details we crave.

Here's their full announcement:

Pokemon Christmas Bash... The Album

pokecmasbash.jpg

Last night I arrived at my late-grandparents home in south Georgia, a Spanish rancher my grandad designed and had built in the 70s. After unpacking, lighting luminaries and having dinner, I spent an hour working on the old record player, trying to get it to work. Once it was spinning I dug up the old Christmas records we used to listen to when I was a kid. At the top of the dusty pile of 33s were two Christmas records by the Chipmunks. I can't believe my parents let us listen to these things so endlessly during the holidays. They were and are horrid. But I guess that was, in some way, their Christmas present to us.

Thankful Tristan isn't a huge fan of the Chipmunks, though he kinda dug listening to the records last night. Instead he listens to something far worse: Pokemon.

Resistance2.jpg PS3

Resistance 2 is Totally Being Trademarked

So we all totally know that Insomniac is developing Resistance 2, but we don't actually know that Insomniac is developing Resistance 2. A sequel to one of the PS3s most praised titles seems like a sure bet, especially after rumor monger Surfer Girl gave us specific tidbits about the game...which while we in no way can trust to be true, certainly inflate our expectations.

On December 18, 2007, Sony filed a trademark for "Resistance 2" in relation to a video game. And while it's not uncommon for companies to go on the trademark defensive, ensuring that another company won't steal the title, we already totally knew that Insomniac is developing Resistance 2. You know, even though we don't at all.
