Beats Impressions

With the PSP's new PC Store open, figured it was worth checking out, putting through its paces. So I jumped on the Australian store, saw SCEE's Beats was on there, saw it was only AUD$12.95 and decided to give it a try. Best decision I made all week. Really! PS3 Dev Kits Going For A Song

Interested, and able, in getting hold of a PS3 dev kit? Oh boy, is this your lucky day. Sony have just announced that the cost of such a unit has been cut by nearly 50% across all three territories, with Japanese kits now at ¥950,000, American at $10,250 and European consoles for €7500. Course saving a few thousand bucks means little/nothing to a big studio, but to the wee ones, that's a ton more cash to spend on essentials like whiteboard markers, nodoze and crummy pizzas.

Apparently, *This* Is Living, According To The PlayStation 3

Sony Computer Entertainment of Europe hasn't decided to hook it's marketing wagon to a more reliable star, as its American counterpart has recently done. It's quite delighted to continue with creep-tastic imagery and poodle-enhancing analogies established by the This Is Living campaign. Games don't sell systems! Certainly not like lithe acrobats in vinyl pants do.

European SingStar Pricing Is Quite Fair

Sony Computer Entertainment Europe has announced the pricing structure for the PlayStation 3 of SingStar and it's absolutely... reasonable? While the Blu-ray disc containing SingStar certainly won't be packed anywhere near capacity with a meager stock of 30 tracks, the additional 44 available in the SingStore on day one will certainly add some variety. The standard SingStar disc will set UK gamers back £24.99, with a dual microphone bundle checking in at £49.99.

Additional songs/videos will cost £0.99/€1.49 and will start flowing from the SingStore on December 17. Or 17 December, if that's your thing. Not an unreasonable price, I would think, as it's about $2 per a la carte track against the pathetic US Dollar. I might also think that many publishers would be wise to start thinking about lowering the prices of their downloadable content in the face of Rock Band's arrival, as my personal earmarking of DLC funds is tilting favorably in its direction.

SingStar PS3 Gets Release Date, World's Worst Box Art

Guess the game's done, with SCEE announcing through official blog Threespeech that SingStar for the PS3 will be launching in Europe on December 7. Just in time to sell a few hundred thousand PS3s before Christmas! To celebrate the whole money-printing, unit-shifting affair, SCEE have commissioned the worst box art in the history of mankind. What is this, 1997? Are Embrace making a comeback? Jesus. They'll also be running a "studio" session at the O2 Arena in London, where you can go book a studio, play some SingStar and get dressed up like the pop sensation only you and your bathroom mirror think you are.

Sony Opens Four New PlayStation Stores

It is a day of great celebration in the countries of Greece, Poland, Saudi Arabia, and the Czech Republic, as Sony Computer Entertainment Europe launches for new iterations of the PlayStation Store for these poor, underprivileged areas.
"When we launched PLAYSTATION®3 (PS3™) in March, we promised that we would continue to improve the service throughout the SCEE territories and offer more stores to new regions as quickly as possible," said Chris Stanton-Jones, VP of Distributor Markets for SCEE. "The launch of these four new stores highlights our commitment both to improving our offering and the importance of these increasingly dynamic markets.
I would have thought they'd have gotten to this sooner, seeing as Europe is the most important continent, but you can't complain when four new countries get access to the most awesome rubber duckie game ever created. more »

40GB PS3s Have "Very Low Failure Rates"

Relax 40GB PLAYSTATION 3 owners. Sony Computer Entertainment of Europe say that rumor is total bunk. The rumor claimed that 40 percent of the 40GB PLAYSTATION 3s were have disc read errors. SCEE "categorically" denies the rumor and states that 40GB models have "the same industry leading, very low failure rates, comparable to the low level failure rates of the 60GB PS3." SCEE head David Reeves states:

We are very proud of the quality and reliability of PLAYSTATION 3 and are disappointed that such extremely sloppy journalism has resulted in this totally inaccurate story... Since launching the 40GB PS3, we have experienced a fantastic jump in sales and the failure rates have remained at the very low level that we not only strive for, but have been achieving since the launch of PS3.

Know: SCEE tells us on record that the "sloppy journalism" remark is a dig at the journalist who started the rumor and "not" Kotaku.

40GB PS3 Still Using 90nm Chips

That rumour about the new 40GB PS3s using the smaller, quieter 65nm chips? Yeah, no. Least, not yet. German site Heise Online managed to get in touch with SCEE regarding the matter, and were told that while consoles in the coming months would start to ship with the newer chips, those shipping now are still packing 90nm chips. Disappointed? Dry your salty tears with the knowledge that thanks to the use of new components elsewhere in the 40GB PS3s, power consumption is down 32.5%.

Europe, Here's Some Upcoming PSN Downloads

SCEE have announced a bunch of stuff Europeans can expect to see in their PlayStation Store over the next couple of months. Which is awfully nice of them, saves all that suspense and the associated gnashing of teeth. Highlights for November (aside from today's very excellent Tori Emaki) will include a big MotorStorm DLC pack, nine PS1 games (G-Police!), Toy Home, the Uncharted demo and some Resistance maps. As for December, well, you'll FINALLY get Everyday Shooter, a Warhawk expansion pack and some more MotorStorm vehicles. Full list (bear in mind, December is incomplete) is after the click. more »

SingStar PS3 Delayed For The US

For all the talk of Metal Gear Solid 4, there's one game that's going to sell more PlayStation 3s than any other over the next 6-9 months. And that's SingStar. Well, it will in Europe and Australia, anyways, where it's launching in December. Americans are going to have to wait, because thanks to some licensing issues with the game's online marketplace, it won't be out for, according to Sony's Peter Dille, "a little bit". Which to us reads like 2008.

buzz!

Is The US Ready For "Mainstream" Gaming?

Europe loves Buzz! Loves SingStar, too. In fact, if it involves getting people together in the living room for some good times, Europe are generally all over it. America, though, not so much. Lots of hate for SingStar, and Buzz! has only just been released in the US (despite having been available in PAL territories for nearly two years). Why the disparity? David Amor, bos of Buzz! Developer Relentless, has an idea:
I have a feeling that games in America are more in the hands of the core gamer than in Europe. I think gaming has probably spread a bit more widely in Europe, compared with America, and maybe the gaming system in America is still more in the den then in the living room.
Think he's right, Americans? Are you trailing in Europe's cultural wake? Or has Amor gone and overlooked that Wii thing everyone seems to be talking about these days.

Sony Goes Trademark Crazy

Sony Computer Entertainment went a bit nutty recently at the US Patent and Trademark Office, with its European division registering new trademarks for unannounced software under the names Ember, SkyBlue, Carriage Return, Race Day, and Strings Attached. These registrants coincide with a number of products already released or announced, including PlayStation Network and PlayStation Eye games Snakeball, Operation Creature Feature, Super Rub'A'Dub and Super Stardust. Unfortunately, the descriptions of the goods and services for each, including helpful hints like "computer games apparatus adapted for use with an external display screen or monitor" don't hint at what these products may be. more »

SCEE Employee Leaked Manhunt 2

Back in September, an early PS2 Manhunt 2 build was leaked online. The question was "who?" Details were scant, but GamePolitics reports that the leak came from a Sony Computer Entertainment Europe employee. According to Manhunt 2 publisher Take-Two:

Take-Two Interactive has confirmed that a former employee of Sony Computer Entertainment Europe (SCEE) has acknowledged his responsibility for the unauthorized online distribution of an unrated play-test version of Manhunt 2 submitted for the European PAL PlayStation 2 computer entertainment system.

Leaking the clip led to that employee's termination. Swing by GamePolitics and get the lowdown.

PS3 WipeOut Loses A Feature Or Three

Wipeout for the PS3 is looking tasty. Same old Wipeout, shinier look, a few new features. Actually, forget that stuff about the new features. FORGET IT. Does any of that matter? For us, no, it's always been about the racing. For you? Depends on how much you enjoy your "Game 3.0", but regardless, consider yourselves informed.

Sony Hasn't Forgotten About Poland

Welcome, Polish PlayStation contingent! SCEE has announced today the formation of Sony Computer Entertainment Polska Sp. z.o.o., an attempt to cater the PlayStation business to the "rapidly growing Polish market." As of April 1, 2008, it will be official, giving Polish PlayStation fans a more complete Polish experience with a Polish PlayStation Store and more games localized in the Polish language. Remember the name Marcin Ziobrowski, because he'll be our go-to-guy for all things PlayStation and Polish.

As a person of Polish descent, I can definitely say I'm exactly 25% more excited about this news than I would normally be upon hearing of a new wholly owned SCEE subsidiary. Nieźle!

Britons Race To Snap Up 60GB PS3s?

Last week, the 40GB PS3 was introduced into the British market. Last week, PS3 sales went up 178% in Britain. So, what, a stunning debut for the new 40GB model? No idea! Thanks to ChartTrack's cunningly selective stat-releasing, we haven't the foggiest how many of those sales were the new 40GB model, and how many were people going a little mad trying to secure one of the last backwards-compatible 60GB models. So your guess is as good as ours. But ours is pretty good.

SingStar PS3 Facing Delays Due To Testing

Anyone know when SingStar's due on PS3? Anyone? If you're nodding your head or jumping up and down with your arm raised, sit down, shut up, you're either an idiot or you're flat-out lying to me. Because nobody knows when the things coming. Not even Sony. Appears that while the core aspects of the game are finished, with reviews of the game due to start appearing on the webs any day now, the downloadable content/marketplace functionality and community features for Joe Public are still deep in testing. And aren't likely to be finished any time soon, because Sony are shying away from announcing a release date for the game. Even though you can bet they want this game to be out before Christmas really really really bad.

why no bc, ps3?

Sony Could Run BC On 40GB PS3s. They Just Don't Want To.

This whole backwards-compatibility thing on the new 40GB PS3 is a pinch confusing. Why, exactly, can't the new model run PS2 games when the old one could? Tired of asking questions of the night, I instead asked SCEE, who fired back a super-detailed, super-helpful guide to the 40GB's BC capabilities. Which is published in full after the click. For now, though, let's just focus on the part where they tell us they could run PS2 games on the 40GB PS3. They just can't be bothered:
The 40GB model, to be launched in Europe on 10th October, is a new model and is not equipped with any of the semi conductors from the PS2, and backwards compatibility would therefore have to be achieved by software emulation alone. The sheer numbers of PS2 titles available, together with the increased complexity of using a software only solution for each and every title means that to ensure accurate software emulation for the majority would be technically challenging, time consuming and costly. As we have mentioned on several occasions, our engineering resources are now focused on developing new and innovative features and services for the PS3 and, as a result the 40GB model does not have backwards compatibility with PS2 titles.

SCEE: PS3 60GB Nixed for UK Too

We ran the story a bit earlier this morning that the UK is getting a 40GB PS3 model at a fancy new €399 price point. The new model won't support PS2 backwards compatibility and will have two less USB ports and no multi-card memory reader.

What wasn't clear from the release was what exactly was going on with the 60GB model, which is being reduced in price to €499. Turns out it is indeed going the way of the US version of the 60GB model.

From Nick Sharples, Sony's Director of Corporate Communications in Europe:

The 60GB Starter pack will remain on sale until stocks run out (a number of months, depending on territory.) Thereafter, the 40GB model will be the only SKU in the SCEE region.

I feel like we need to have a wake or something. Meanwhile the SCEA folks remind us that no announcements have been made for North America about potential price drops, SKU shuffling or new models.

SCEE Confirms PS3 Price Drop

Looks like we just hit step six.

Sony Computer Entertainment of Europe just confirmed what we seemingly all already knew: The Playstation 3 is getting a price drop. Only they don't call it a price drop, they call it a new model. Why does this sound familiar?

The "new" 40GBHDD PS3 will hit SCEE territories on Oct. 10 for €399 and comes with a SIXAXIS wireless controller, WiFi, HDMI two USB ports, rather than four, and no multi memory card port. The new model will also not be backwards compatible with the PS2.

SCEE also announced that the 60GB PS3 will not sell for €499 until they run out of supplies. Which makes me think they're getting rid of the 60GB model in Europe. I'll be checking on both that and if this will in anyway be mirrored in the U.S. or other territories. Stay tuned.

SingStar R&B; Tracklist

You hear the word SingStar, you see the suffix R&B;, you get a little hesitant. No, you get concerned. SingStar's tracklists can be, Rock Ballads aside, a mixed bag of crap at best, but the prospect of a whole disc full of men with girly voices singing about their girls, Friday nights and making love is a horrifying one. Thankfully, Sony have decided to get liberal with the term R&B;, including tracks from actual, real old-fashioned R&B; artists as well as a sprinkling of hip-hop. Though frankly the lack of an ultra-cheesy Boyz II Men track is unforgivable. more »

rumor smushed

Sony Denies "Big Bang" Next Week

Rumors of a "big bang" announcement from Sony appeared on the French edition of GamePro late last week, issuing in a mini-torrent of speculation from internet bottom feeders, console war veterans, bloggers and message board posters. Speculation that Sony would be holding a conference on October 12th seemed to tie in nicely with the now painfully obvious future appearance of the PLAYSTATION 3 40GB announcement.

SCEE has since told Eurogamer that "has nothing of the sort planned", meaning we won't have to wake up early/stay up late to learn what they have up their sleeves. While spokespeople say they have nothing planned nor have they announced anything new, that doesn't rule out a "small bang" announcement about the new PS3 model that doesn't quite fit into the terms provided in PR speak.

US PS3 Backwards Compatability Search Now Live

With the 80GB model of the PS3, Americans were invited to feel some of Europe's pain. Gone was the promise of near-universal PS2 backwards compatability, replaced with a software-based emulation system where many games work, many games work with issues and some games do not work. At all. I say some of Europe's pain, though, because half the hassle of it all is in checking the PAL BC list on SCEE's torturous BC site to see if your games work. See, the site does not contain a search function. The newly-launched US search site does, allowing you to enter the name of your PS2 games into a small text field, conduct a search and be provided with a prompt answer. Awfully clever, that, and definitely ground-breaking technology. I bet SCEE are kicking themselves they didn't think of it.
