The Wall Street Journal published an interesting piece on Wii shortages, you know, with all their fancy WSJ reporting. The overall consensus seems to be that you're better not having enough product on the shelves than too much. We're sure your minds are blown. From UCLA management professor Christopher Tang.
Psychologically, it's better if the customer is begging for the product.I'm sure Reggie would agree, as long as those excited customers stick around.

Fuck the Wii
Any Torontonians here go to Sams Club right... Now I just saw 6 of them yesterday. No one seems to know they have them or something
@ballaboy311: That was totally uncalled for. For shame
so the wsj thinks the wii is some kind of girl you pick up at a bar?
@ballaboy311:
Oh GREAT comment! I applaud your intelligence!
Jackass...
Anyway i was wondering: are there still gamers who still dont have it but really want it? Or is it just mom's and dad's who want to get one for the kids?
i wonder how many girls have sucked reggie's cock just to get a wii?
@Goldwings:
lol.
@Goldwings: I only hate it because it is the second worst system I have ever played.
@Goldwings: Ban Hammer monday!!!
@ballaboy311:
I have seen you around these parts recently and cannot help but notice that you really dislike the Wii.Care to elaborate? I myself do not own a Wii and I do not want one as well, I am just curious about your perspective on it.
Call me crazy, but the shortages of the Wii have kinda turned me off of them. I kinda prefer the systems that are available, because other gamers I know can relate with them better.
Afterall, THEY HAVE THE SAME SYSTEMS!!!
Is the Wall Street Journal hinting that Nintendo is purposely constraining the supply of the Nintendo Wea-k? nyuk nyuk nyuk!
@cchrist: I got trampled by a group of angry parents fighting over the last Wii at a best buy last week. i got one cause i love the old games more than the new ones but i was trying to get one for my little cousin but those parents who have to buy their kids love will not go down without a fight. So to answer your question the people still buying them are the ones who still can't get one for themselfs or parents getting them for their kids.
@zombiefrank: Well I bought it just because I saw one at the store. I thought it was going to be a whole new experience. Then all I got was a whole bunch of crappy games with very shakey controls. I tried a whole bunch of games and did not enjoy any of them. I could go on but why.
@murderface:
Your handle is MURDERFACE and yet you got trampled. =P
@ballaboy311:
Good enough.lol.
I have played it at my friends house a lot and I have not been able to get into it either. Even after playing the big titles like Mario and Zelda, I just was not interested. But I can see why many people would enjoy it as well.
I'd buy a 360 for myself, I'd buy a Wii to play with my girlfriend. At the end of the day, I'd rather have a Wii and a g/f than a 360 and an apartment full of memories of what dating used to be like.
@murderface:
I reserved one here in may and got it a week later and i was like "cool" and that was it :P No shortages here :D
@DigitalHero:
You clearly have never been up against an angry mom :o
The store I work at got four Wiis in during my last shift there. They sold out, and I am not exaggerating here one bit, in three minutes. We opened the boxes up, and they all sold. Instantly. For the rest of the day, we had to put up with stressed out parents asking us when we'd get our next shipment in.
Even if Nintendo isn't deliberately constraining their shipments to make demand higher, they're definitely inadvertently doing just that. I personally believe they are, though, as Nintendo's even taken to no longer notifying retailers about Wii shipments in advance. They just ship them in tiny unmarked boxes, so stores can't even pre-plan for shipments. It's getting crazy out there.
@die_die_die_die_die_die_love:
Gives me an idea for a new contest! Best part! No one has to die!
Suck my Wee for a Wii! Hell it even sounds fun!
@murderface: Wow! Sucks that you got trampled. Take comfort in the fact that for all their rampant "parenting", the kids of those consumerist monsters will end up detesting them for spending more time shopping than they do playing with their neglected offspring.
Mom (clearly on "meds"): "Billy, you broke daddy's big screen with your Wii-mote thingy! "
Billy: "I was aiming at dad's stupid face, bitch! And you're next!"
Mom: "You're so expressive! Mommy's gonna buy you a stereo to show you how proud she is (hic!)"
Billy: "I HATE YOU!"
@TurboSloth: It's funny everyone I know talks about their girlfriends taking they're wiis. Mine likes the 360 more and thinks the wii is too mini-game-ish.
My dad wants one for Christmas.. So now I'm here feeling like a parent trying to find a Wii. No luck though, /cry. I've never really wanted one for myself, but now I think if I were to find two I'd buy em'. Seems I'm going to have to get him a watch or something though.
@ballaboy311:
Impressive. That's impossible for most people.
... I wonder if I can trade my Wii on craigslist for a 360 with HDMI support.
@Archaotic:
I was talking to my buddy the other day about how it seems that kids do not really play, or are not interested, with toys anymore. I am 25 so maybe I am out of touch, but it is definitely obvious that electronic media has really taken off for a majority of demographics.
Is it possible that the Wii has become the new Furby?
The PS3 and 360 are so much a better value than what you get with the Wii, I don't understand what the facination is with it. It's like the Cabbage Patch dolls, ugly as sin, but everyone wanted it because they were hard to get and hyped as hell by the media. Yes, I own all 3, the Wii is by far he least used.
@zombiefrank: lol I'm gonna say no on the furby thing. Only because my mom doesn't want 15 different types of the wii.
@Rabidsquirrel:
lol. Sorry I just meant about Holiday craze thing.lol
@DigitalHero: let me re-state my quote angry heavy-set parents. You ever seen Raiders of the last ark. Nuf said. hahaha
@zombiefrank:
Well, with the sheer overwhelming numbers of distressed Christmas-shopping parents who show up looking for the consoles and the EXTREME gratitude of the small few who actually get their hands on them, I'd say it sure feels like it.
You have no idea how many parents come into my store asking if the empty display Wii boxes we have on the wall are real. It's uncanny.
Parent (out of breath): Do you have any Wiis?
Me: No, I'm sorry, we don't.
Parent: What about those on the wall?
Me: Ma'am, those are empty display boxes.
Parent: What? Why are they on the wall then?
I think I get some of that at least five times a day. Now, I'm never rude to these people since they're not bad people, just a little ignorant, but sometimes I just want to tell them "Look, unless you show up here on totally random chance the second we open a box of Wiis, you're not getting one. Buy your kid a DS instead."
@zombiefrank: As an european, I used to play with wooden trains and letter-blocks. Lego's took the scene later. And then NES.
I wonder how long Nintendo plans to fool kids and parents into the hype meteor known Wii.
They should consider farming as a secondary bussines, since the poor sheeps keep fighting for the 3 leaves of grass that they drop every week.
@Rabidsquirrel: I am a craigslist veteran. So yes I am sure someone would trade you a 360 with HDMI for your wii. People are going nuts to try and get them before Christmas. So it is really a sellers market.
@TitillatedOcelot: LOL Nice!!!!
@zombiefrank: You're out of touch. I'm 39 and have two kids, aged 7 and 10. My House Runneth OVER with toys. Star Wars, Legos, Barbies, crafts, action figures, e-z bake ovens, stuffed animals, pirate ships, Webkinz, polly pockets.....
Kids don't play with toys anymore? How do you think Toys 'R Us stays in business? Have you been to a Target or Walmart lately? The Toy Section is one of the biggest in most department stores.
@WizarDru:
Wheww thank god!!lol. When I have kids I want them to enjoy playing with toys also. Electronic are too damn expensive. I will just keep feeding my own overpriced 360 habits for myself. Thanks for the insight.
When I have kids, I know what toys I'll be giving them.
"Arch Jr., this is a Super Nintendo. And this is Chrono Trigger. You can't leave your room until you beat it, and no, you can't play Halo 4. Stop asking."
@ballaboy311: I support this comment.
Ahh, another Wii article, another squad of idiots to flame and bash the system irrelevant to the article. Keep it up guys! Show those casual gamers who's boss with your witty banter!
@Godstar: I'm guessing you don't have friends or family to play with? From what I've seen of the PS3/360, not a lot of software goes out of it's way to allow local multiplayer on the system. The Wii has a lot of titles that do. If you don't have people who are mature enough to pick up and play something that might look a little ridiculous and goofy, then yes. I can see why you'd say that. A lot of Wii games rely on a more social atmosphere. The value is really determined a lot on that. It's sort of like factoring out XBL if you didn't have a broadband connection. Is the system as good when you remove one of it's intended uses?
As for the article? I think the bigger problem is the fact that they seem to be having a lot of varying building facilities for different things, building Wiis, building remotes, now they're building zappers and Wii Fits too. I can't assume all of these are done in the same location, most their stuff is outsourced (I believe?) They ought to take this fat cash they're making and buy up a manufacturing company. Make their products when they're hot and selling, retool and make something else when they're not. Get into trouble? Sell off the facility to another buyer.
@Archaotic: No mario love? SPW is perhaps the best in the series.
@MasterOfPastures: *SMW
@MasterOfPastures:
Oh, no argument there. Super Mario World is great, but I'm still seething from playing it last night and going through 60 1UPs trying to beat the second to last level of Special World. Dear God is that level made of pain and suffering.
If people stay obsessed with getting their hands on one, they never get a chance to think about the lack of any reason to really own one.
Begging for the product only works for so long. A lot of people will just say $#@% it and either get something else or just not game at all. It can backfire quickly.
@ballaboy311: What the fuck does that even mean? Worst system? How do you judge a system's quality? Is it "worse" than the Atari 2600? Or the Jaguar? Or even the Gamecube? How about the Playstation or the PS2? Hmm? Cuz from a purely technical standpoint those are all "worse" systems. And if it's by games, then you must not have played many systems, because the Wii already has some amazing titles that'll stand out in my mind for years to come, namely Twilight Princess, Mario Galaxy, Metroid Prime Corruption, and Super Paper Mario, not to mention the Trauma Center series, WarioWare, which is tons of fun, Mario Strikers Charged, which is also tons of fun, Medal of Honor Heroes 2, which is amazing both single player and online, and all of the wonderful Virtual Console titles available for the system, I just don't see how it could possibly be "the second worst system you've played" unless you've only played 2, maybe 3 or 4 systems. And keep in mind, the sucker's only been out for a year, and more awesomeness is sure to come. It's just as worthy of being in a gamers entertainment center as a PS3 or 360.
@Archaotic: I just love the music. But it's hard to find.
@ampillion: And just to reiterate, I don't care if you don't like the Wii, if it's not what you're looking for in gaming, that's cool. Quit showing up in every thread related to it just to spout out a comment with the intelligence of ballaboy311's brilliance. Thanks.
meh, wii is for kids. I still like some games tho...but not many, Mario galaxy and uh...maybe metroid? but i don't like FPS's that much...ever since they've been the most made types of games in this gen.
@cchrist: newsflash -it's not May anymore. It's buy a dated system for status symbol and prove your worth to your kids season.
Two days ago the FRONT PAGE of our large local paper devoted nearly HALF of it's space to a thinly veiled advertisement for the Wii... Old People Love The Wii and do stuff like bowling and golfing. hooray!
Buried 3 pages later was the apparently not as interesing as a game system intelligence assessment on Iran.
Print media can go away now, I'll find something else to do while riding the stagecoach..
@murderface:
I can see the resemblance of a 400 pound Soccer Mom and a large rolling stone, trust me!
O WSJ, how I love thee and your timely articles. I mean, I read it often to keep "Abreast of the Market" (you might get that joke if you read wsj), but that is for finance interviews. I mean, all of their pieces like this one are always like "Really? Because that is just breaking news and wow your take on it is SO insightful."
And I love that the "conservative" earnings estimates are solely attributed to the Japanese-ness of Nintendo, as if there is no incentive, especially when one has a stock price shooting through the roof and keeping P/E ratios in the perverbial "nosebleed section" that some tech and software companies (hi Apple! and EA despite their issues the past year) seem to love, to continually keep a conservative earnings estimate so that when it is announced that you have to "oops" raise your expected earnings, your stock options go through the damned roof. I dunno. Just a thought.
But I love Nintendo, I mean, it is the stock I pitch when asked to sell one in these interviews and it always manages to get me a look, but hey, they rock man.
it's all ebay's fault - there are 21,135 listings for wii's right now (and that's just in the usa). back in the day, people actually bought something cause they were gonna use it. nowadays that guy in front of you is probably gonna flip it to make a quick buck. f' ebay.
@cchrist:
I really want it now that i have the ability to buy Wii stars... Of course, i have about a year to do so but i was planning to get it sometime next year anyway...
:)
@DigitalHero: Yeah at least Indy only had to deal with one and not several. hahaha
@MasterOfPastures:
Hmm... What would keep a kid busy longer:
Super Mario World or Chrono Trigger?
Trigger gets the edge for being an RPG, which are generally lengthy. But, Mario World was from a time when platformers had more than just 20 levels, and took more than 2 minutes to beat a stage.
Both are great games, so you can't go wrong either way.
@MasterOfPastures:
Super Mario World, it's a blast from the past! In Super Mario World, you've got to move fast! Mario and Luigi are doing what they can, Yoshi and the Princess are giving them a hand! (Super Mario World!) Super Mario World, it's a blast from the past! (Super Mario, Super Mario, Super Mario) In Super Mario World, it's a blast! (Super Mario, Super Mario, Super Mario World!)
We bought one back in November as an Xmas present for my wife's sister and her husband before it got crazier at the stores again. In retrospect, we probably should have bought a few and been re-selling them, but I'm not a big fan of scalping. I would say that in NYC, until about three weeks ago, you could reliably get them by showing up at the big BBs or the Nintendo store around opening on a Sunday. Now the BBs aren't getting much and the line at the Nintendo store forms at 4am.
@murderface: You should have had a pelvic-thrust mace sprayer to keep them at bay.
Well obviously the Wall Street Journal doesn't understand economics, because I've heard this theory clearly disproven on Internet forums.
That was sarcasm, for you trolls out there.
@MasterOfPastures: I know what you mean, but think of it this, way if nintendo didn't farm the poor sheeps, sooner or later Microsoft and Sony would do the same.
So when you think about it, would you rather have your hate-fun on Nintendo or on Sony or Microsoft?
Food for thought indeed.
:)
@Soldier_CLE:
"Call me crazy, but the shortages of the Wii have kinda turned me off of them. I kinda prefer the systems that are available, because other gamers I know can relate with them better.
Afterall, THEY HAVE THE SAME SYSTEMS!!!"
that's funny because there are more Wiis out there than 360s or PS3s so in retrospect your comment wasn't so much funny as stupid.
@NeoAkira: The problem is that the Wii isn't being bought by people who are ever going to buy another game.
The PS3 and 360, on the other hand, have vigorous software markets, so the longer Nintendo keeps manufacturing this shortage, the few actual game buyers who are interested are going to look at the wide variety of games on the other systems and be lured away. It's only natural.
