Jeremy Vine: I love Led Zeppelin

Last Updated: 12:01am GMT 30/11/2007

Broadcaster Jeremy Vine continues our countdown to rock's greatest reunion on December 10

  • Were Led Zeppelin the greatest band of all time?

  • When I was a teenager, Led Zep were worse than a joke. They embodied the stadium rock that the likes of the Sex Pistols and the Jam were seeking to destroy. Our fave bands played in garages, and were only watched by as many people as could squeeze in: small was beautiful!

Led Zeppelin: Loud, clever and unembarrassable

Why like a band that couldn't record a song three minutes long? Or tune up for fewer than 30,000 people?

Then three years ago, while painting the house, I stuck on the How the West Was Won collection. I painted the hallway, the bedroom and the kitchen as the music roared - and suddenly saw the point of Led Zep at last.

Listen to Rock and Roll and, like all great rock, it's halfway between the most serious thing in the world and the most comical. Immigrant Song and Black Dog shook the furniture as I painted; these guys were loud, clever and unembarrassable.

By the time both layers of gloss were dry, I was a fan.
