Table guide
The annual performance tables for schools published on these pages
are drawn from official data collected and supplied by the
Department for Education and Skills. They show how all schools and sixth form colleges in England
performed in the 2006 examination cycle, except for special schools
which are omitted because they are assessed on different criteria. The publication of the school by school data is consistently
opposed by the teacher unions which say it gives a misleading
picture of how well pupils are taught but the Government has
refused to bow to pressure to return to the secret garden of
education of which was a feature of the 1960s and 70s. While it is true that statistics do not tell the full story, and
that they can be manipulated, there is no doubt that the information
in these tables is extremely valuable for parents seeking to
evaluate schools as long as it is considered alongside other
material, such as Ofsted reports, admission criteria and local
knowledge about the area that they serve. |
