Why I Love Guitar Solos

Words:

Behind the myriad pop hooks of Marnie Stern's critically-adored debut album, there's a constantly shifting pattern of shimmering guitar glissando. She is finger-tapping, the accursed technique of Eighties big hair guitarists. It's a hallucinogenic texture that hooks the listener’s ears on the snagging rain of notes and takes advantage of the hypnotic effect so she can then howl random images into their brain. When Eddie Van Halen did it was "like masturbating".

Marnie Stern - Patterns of a Diamond Ceiling

It was ALWAYS a good noise.

It's unlikely that this obscurity on Kill Rock Stars will make eight-finger-tapping cool again, but it does emphasise the sheer abstract-ness of guitar solos. Guitar solos are meaningless, non-literal – there is no logical reason in any rock or pop song why this instrument should suddenly arc out in a furious scribble of notes and go widdlywiddlyneoewwreeogh!!

Other than as pure texture, which can be exaggerated by dislocating that pattern of guitar and using it as miasmic audio wallpaper, like Marnie Stern – or Eddie Van Halen in 'Eruption' – guitar solos are purely functional. I like guitar solos that are used to throttle-up a piece of music, that fuel-inject. One band took that premise and used it to tear music a new soul: Slayer.

The Slayer tagteam of Kerry King and Jeff Hanneman spent years trying to imitate Judas Priest's duelling guitar leads. They never really learnt how to play according to the musical theory of their heroes – y'know, scales and all that jazz. So they made up something else instead.

People still don’t quite get Slayer.

Slayer songs are whirling, almost mathematical grids of noise that are sliced up and down by the serial killer guitar solos of King and Hanneman. When their BC Rich guitars lash out across Reign In Blood, it's convincingly like a flickknife to the face. Drummer Dave Lombardo described the guitar leads as being power points that trigger his rhythms. When the music skids into a guitar solo his pace picks up, instinctively releasing a flurry of beats that splits Slayer's sound into a cryptic maze, constantly rearranging and patrolled by circular saw-blades.

Dragonforce play their solos like video-game power-ups. The point where the solo screams in is the bit where you get an invincibility shield, or where Sonic turns into SuperSonic. In one video, 'Force guitarists Sam and Herman are even shown 'playing' themselves on a console controller as they battle in a Mortal Kombat guitar duel. Check it here.

People laugh, but I want my guitar heros to be Merlins who believe that if they play fast enough they can pull Randy Rhoads' aeroplane back through space-and-time like a fingers-aflame Donnie Darko. The way that Steve Vai almost certainly knew he was the devil's guitar player when he ran pentagrammatic rings around Karate Kid in Crossroads.

When Vai plays it straight, though, it's boring. Like the incidental music from Top Gun. It’s guitar as soulful melisma, as diva. A priapic wail purpose-built to soundtrack images of stars and stripes scaling up flagpoles, and fluttering with indefatigability.

The devil's real guitar player is Morbid Angel's seven-stringer Trey Azagthoth, a man who reportedly sees visions when he solos, from "the other side… something that is definitely not human." Death metal solos are senseless strangling of notes that seek to invoke more than blithely evoke.

A good guitar solo drags out what the lyrics can't quite voice. In Brian Eno's 'Baby's On Fire', Robert Fripp's solo makes Eno's cubist tune into wreckage. It melts down whatever the lyrics leave. Funkadelic's 'Maggot Brain' is just spiralling fractals of solo growing like alien fauna – chiming with the eco-warning spoken introduction.

Brian Eno - Baby's On Fire

Perhaps the reason why this pseudosynaesthesia works on guitars and doesn’t on, say, saxophones, is almost purely because of the extreme sense of physicality you get from the sound of a writhing guitar.

I love metal because the playing is so locked-in, that I find it affecting my breathing, my pulse and my whole physical constitution. It's like having guitar strings threaded through your veins. When the solo scythes in it can rip you right apart or transcend you – like Kirk Hammett's dash for freedom in 'Fade To Black', the frantic flurry of notes Mastodon conjure to ward off evil, or the psychedelically sad, inconsolable harmonic screams of the late Dimebag.

And all the while Kerry King shreds at the strings, as I twitch, helplessly, and laughs like the damned.

Van Halen - Eruption

Marnie Stern shreds it for Dave live in Brighton this Friday 13th July at The Greenhouse Effect.

Can U Feel ZARG

You must surely know of the US Psychotonic Association's claims about Soviet psychic experiments being the cause of Legionnaire's disease, cattle mutilations, UFO abductions, and the sinking of the US submarine Thresher, and perhaps have overheard frantic discussions regarding that pesky scalar howitzer situation that has messed up the weather ('North America has not had 'normal' weather since 1976' sez Mr. Tom Bearden, notorious Psychotonist and head honcho of the Vacuum Energy Crew).

Claims that these experiments have aroused mankind's collective unconciousness, sometimes refered to as 'ZARG', are less well-known, and that is the reason we have decided to focus on them tonight. The timeframe for ZARG's emergence appears to coincide with the development of the Roland TB-303, followed by a series of obscure experiments carried out in big cities of North America's Eastern Coast where large numbers of unsuspecting humans were subjected to high doses of squelchy sounds and repetitive cadences at extremely loud levels. Since the nature of the impact of these researches is still a matter of contention in the literature, today's post at cod-theory outlet 20jazzfunkgreats shall attempt to generate some empirical evidence, 'hard data' if you will, by featuring some 'songs' which could be expected to arouse 'ZARG' reactions in the populace.

So, without further ado, let us begin, the measuring equipment is ready, please do listen to the sounds below at suitably high levels, even better, track down the sources in their original format, this is, vinyl, and purchase them, we will be watching the dials with much patience and attention, ready to test the ZARG theory. With some luck we'll get the outcome of our work published in the Fortean times, for the pseudo-win, as ever.

Bristolian spazz bass heavy dance shuffle wizkid Luke's Anger bleeps up the jam in 'Give 'em some Freq', his Tigerbass 12 debut. Old Skool Cristian Vogel windowlicks Steve Pointdexter's Pussy wagon, which is hardcore & yummy yay, and makes our belly-pipes twitch like a swarm of frenzied eels.

Luke's Anger- Method to Madness

In case you hadn't realised, WHOP has as many letters as ZARG, coincidence? Feel free to be a fool, fool.

Fast Eddie Smith & Tyree Cooper- Whop

Fast Eddie Smith & Tyree Cooper drop it like its jacking in another masterpiece of Chicago future bop concussion, you can make a party cake with that beat, and eat it too. This 12 goes for 18 quid at our local vinyl dealer, but I think I'm gonna have to get it to get high on the drum.

Certified genius extraordinaire Andy Jenkinson takes over the Chelmsford philarmonic orchestra for a very inspired, indeed breathtaking, rendition of one of Albinoni's adages, aka Mickey Mouse on a very hardcore acid trip painting disneyland dayglo while chased by an army of feral mops, as documented at the end of Thomas Pynchon's last book, who could possibly want new rave when you can get lost in the melodic equivalent of the spirals of Gaudi's sacred family as beheld on a sunny Sunday morning after two night of partying, minus the throwing up? Epiphanic, as it were.

Ceephax Acid Crew- Prelude in 303 major

Get this in the 030303 #2 12 released by Marguerita Recordings.

Anyhow, enough for now, our equipment has pulled an Akira on us, we are sprouting bloated tentacles all over the scene, this is totally what we hoped for, off we go to join our half squid half octopus brethren, watch out fishermen, Lovecraftian thrills galore lurk in the depths of the abyss to blow your consciences away into the voids of madness, napper!

Cosmo-planetary Music

Today is a day for remixes - nice ones, not pointless shit - done by some of our favourite disco dwelling souls, dark of heart and noble of spirit:

A few moons back we posted the In Flagranti remix of Black Devil Disco Club, with its wide screen cinematic visions of horrorshow bass heavy bleep hypnosis at the hands of brain-hungry mutant corpses. Black Devil have now repaid the favour to In Flagranti by warping the new single into a chrome bat speeding through the swirling mists of a haunted mansion.

In Flagranti - Non Plus Ultra (Black Devil Disco Club Remix)

It starts off all potentially light-hearted 198O's pop until the echoing synths and vocal menace sound off and the sky clouds over to shield the dancing demons from the Sun. The pressure drops, everything is cast in grey, then it just gets darker. The percussion is nothing new but Black Devil has always been about "if it ain't broke, don't fix it" mentalities, and the way that this bubbles and flashes liquid spears of pure black evil at you, your in no position to complain. DJ's at electronic jamborees of ghouls and goblins save this one for the midnite hour, its like an invocation thing, we are told.

Line the Devil's pockets by buying the pervy-covered vinyl here

Speaking of the midnite hour, our gothic soothsayer pal Midnight Mike has just covered 'United' by some band called Throbbing Gristle to wonderful effect and the Naum Gabo Optimo fiend has worked his disco magic on the flip of the 12".

Midnight Mike - United (Naum Gabo Remix)

The A side is a sweet slo-mo new wave cover version that appears on the upcoming 'Midnight Karaoke' LP. This Naum Gabo remix makes it dancefloor friendly by plucking the planets from the heavens and forging them into giant disco balls with sinister synth basslines and sampled sounds of satellites collapsing into black holes. Midnight Mike's vocal rasp is part intergalactic cyborg warlord and deviant lizard-man dwelling in the city's shadows, folding inwards and occasionally doubling up as the cold electro shines off of the sequin covered planets.

Sample more Wizard-Pop with this 7O's-esque sci-fi warlock mini epic video for 'Interplanetary Music' featuring vocals from Zongamin and Bishi, a cover of the original by Sun Ra.

DIY Gambinos

Tedious corporate droning about the death of culture brought forward by the arrival of a new information distribution model based on diffusion/hybridisation instead of consumption and control is challenged by a thriving network of true DIY labels and artists who perhaps won't build many mansions in the hills of Malibu or fuel international cocaine trade but are in this thing for all the right reasons, and rock. Labels such as Deathbomb Arc, Not Not Fun, Gilgongo or Lovepump United, to name but a few, are shining examples of what we are talking about, and this post is for them, and their supporters.

20JFG favourites Foot Village plummet you senseless with a hailstorm of drumss, or the Smurfs as a predatorial mammal techno horde of little gold coloured motherfuckers, get lost in their forest and be probably destroyed to awake in the spirit world, oh immortal loa, as neolithic party beats turn your ribcage into a heart-suffocating deathspider and the stars gaze merciless while your flesh decays becoming biomass, sort of like the Clan of the Cave Bear (loh!) meets House Party 2, FTW.

Foot Village- 4 Narc Party

Foot Village start a US tour this month so get ready to receive the forest and transcend into the rhythm in the dates and venues indicated here, don't forget to say hi from us Blighty confined scoundrels.

Baby Gecko arrive from Arizona in a lovely split 7 with no wave sax gremlins Soft Shoulders recently released by Gilgongo, pushing into the vanishing point at the end of the road with the committed strength of true post-hardcore noise rock believers, the sort of epic progressions we were talking about last week unfurl like continental rifts played back at ultra-fast speed, or as they say in these parts, 'someone threw Sonic Youth into the harvester and their blood nurtured our crops, may the fruits of the Earth make the children of this farm grow strong and healthy' (they do).

Baby Gecko- Paint the Streets

Not Not Fun keep the dens of the wierd improv noise conspiration warm with a steady supply of totemic vinyl artifacts which, when placed in a turntable, raise the temperature and soothe the spirits, the sounds are oft agressive and gnarly, but then we wouldn't have it any other way because we so love to get drenched in the sticky drip drip rain & white light white heat emissions of powerful spirits let loose, or shake to the ominous ruminations of dark beasts of a geological age which lie hidden in the grooves of a seemingly inoffensive record, that is the darkness of the abyss in which we gaze, Heavy Winged stare back making our heart skip several beats. From their astounding split with Blues Control in the Bored Fortress series.

the real jazzfunk

So I don't have that much of a clue about funk or jazz, soz kids, you know how the name of this blog is taken from a lovely album by sex magick gender noise terrorist unit Throbbing Gristle and whatnot, which is both jazz, funk and everything else that is or has been deemed to be dirty and unwholesome in the universe, because I don't know much about these genres but they were supposed to be bad and filthy and dirty weren't they, but then most people wouldn't agree that this album is jazz or funk...

So I don't know much about these genres really, awright, I don't like this situation, I want to eradicate my ignorance- a big fat bloated fly in the filthy wall of my conscience's kitchen- but then there's such small a time, and so many records...so receive apologies for the lack of information or insight about bands and tunes included in this post, most of them have been fetched from mixes, mixtapes or when out and about, listen to that, run to ask someone what the fuck is this, which is the way it works for the eternal immortal win. Because 20JFG doesn't care about genres or dates, but about good music, and any party you play these tunes at it's a party we wanna be at.

So let's get on with it, admonishing our correspondent Lord Nuneaton Savage an actual soul savant who was supposed to hurl some Funkadelic this way aeons ago, I told you you were getting told off Mat!

Sam played Art Ensemble of Chicago's Theme de Yo Yo at his first legendary 20JFG djing participation with Benedict in the olden days, sending me in a delirious frenzy from which I still haven't recovered. Since then this larger than life tune has remained in the cryogenic to-do-list, until Shige & Victoria reminded me of the urgency of its posting by playing it at the Extreme Animals gig last week. So what you have is a blaxploitation free jazz crossover monster with bristling horns that stab crush and maul, and a bass lasso which pulls your body across downtown painting the black concrete with blood, for this you say thanks a lot too. Fontella Bass' hip priestess presence is the proverbial icing in the cake, it's not that you can dig it, it's that you should dig it, otherwise you really need to haul your ass away from squareville into some more soulful quarters.

Art Ensemble of Chicago- Theme de Yo Yo

I first listened to the Junkyard Band's kiddy rap rattle oddyssey 'the Word' in Terranova's DJ kicks, and then sometime after in the Optimo How to Kill the DJ Pt. 2 mix...there's not that much to say about this tune, you invited it for dinner last night and it ate your daughters and part of your leg with a mastodontic bassline sufficient to make all the dubstep/T&B; heads out there sweat gold bricks, after which it made a racket with all the cooking pots & pans and ran crazy into a corner of the streer to do some breakdancing with the rest of its crew like Kangol was still cool or something.

The Junkyard Band- The word

Similarly booty shaking is War Galaxy', which we discovered via Mike Simonetti & Dan Selzer delicious mix as 'Crazy Rhythms', you know how we are always going on about Can being German Funk and so on ad so forth, well, then I guess this is Black Kraut rock, or maybe that was Afrika Bambaataa, the percussive mayhem is but a blueprint for what was to come after, say Liquid Liquid or A Certain Ratio via Banbarra, and all those who ripped them off afterwards, it makes one wish they hadn't banned smoking in clubs, if only to hide with blue clouds of cancer the pungent smells of a party crowd going totally maracas.

War- Galaxy

And that's it for today you lovely fools, go to the launch of Cough/Cool tonight at the Pier One Nightspot, Real Gold Crew's new weekly London club with awesome secret guests and the kind of spirit we respect i.e. evacuate the vacuousness and focus on the music yeh we'll catch up with you there at the end of the month w00T

Hailz the Nite

Crossover are truly, madly, deeply within a world of their own. But all the better for it as, judging by the way the real world is going, imaginary realms are totally where its at. They sat awkwardly within the pneumatic techno and acid-house landscapes of International Deejay Gigolos with neon pentagrams etched across their alien hearts. They released "Fantasmo" in 2OO1 and made all the other Electroclash posers look like the amateurs that they clearly were. I saw them play that mad shit live in London one time; Dez wrapped phone wire around himself and headbutted his drum pads to the beat while Verona channeled the Love Goddess of Phobos and hypnotised us mere mortals with her otherworldly ways. Then came the criminally overlooked "Cryptic And Dire Sallow Faced Hoods Blast Off Into Oblivion", born from the unholy union of synth and Venusian mecha-snake with help from Carlo Penisi, of Goblin.

We aren't too sure whats happening with the Gigolos partnership nowadays, I guess its defunkt, but who cares when they are releasing CDR's by themselves! And when they are as good as the new one its time to do the Satanic jig to its drumbeats and pitch-dark synth cackles!

Crossover - Night Hawks

If they ever make a film of Black Hole (which I sincerely hope they don't), 'Night Hawks' needs to feature on the soundtrack, with its cloaked figure shifting through trees in the moonlight sensibilities. Those Night Hawks sound nasty and parasitic but in a cool way, when danger can sometimes be fun, y'know, like fighting a bear or stealing dinosaur eggs. Either way its the menacing drum pounding of Pagan troll parties deep in the woods that you can faintly hear from your bedroom window.

Order the CDR from the Crossover myspace page.

Back now to the icey chill of the Chromatics campfire underneath a canopy of icicle covered palm-trees, lit by the frozen blue Moon. A new CDR is being forged in the furnaces of Italians Do It Better and here is the title track:

Chromatics - Night Drive

Chromatics go pop! In their own special ways of course, this isn't ex-Sugababes sampling The Human League and mentioning Prince a couple of times in the chorus, this is the dukes of 2O12 apocalypse disco riding through your city in the small hours of the nite, windows down, collars up.

'Night Drive' is a close cousin of 'In The City', just more urgent and yet a little more whimsical with the effortless glimmering vocals of Ruth, Princess of Neptune. If 'In The City' was a cruise through the concrete metropolis, then 'Night Drive' is the journey through star-lit country roads back to the castle.

General Motorik

This particular species of feral psychedelic rock requires air like fire, big expanses of blue space against which it 'hurls itself with sickening force', no resistance encountered so it keeps lurching forward into a sonic vanishing point it never quite reaches, there's no end to the music but an arbitrary break which is why it only makes final sense live, where exhaustion and not running time in its support media, how inappropriate, dictates the end of the trip. Put this expansive spirit in an urban environment and it'd hit the city walls in two seconds, there you have punk, or it falls in love, it keeps fixated on the concrete (in more than a sense) instead of drawing patterns into the abyss, thesis, you need Space (and Time) for psychedelia. I think that this association explains why most of this savage road movie rampage pulsating rock music comes from the USA, long grey roads criss crossing beautiful landscapes of blankness under a neverending skydome you paint with angels, devils and ghosts, step on the accelerator least they catch you, it also explains the obvious connection to german motorik, it's an autobahn thing innit?

Wipers were one of Kurt Cobain's fave bands, he had some wicked taste Kurt Cobain, he could have written for 20jazzfunkgreats. Anyway, yeah, they are totally just awesome, sit on the anthemic hardcore passenger seat of the title track which closes their 81 album, a metronomic furious throb cutting across the clouds of political confusion, Eternal Riffs of Pure Ascending Power drop from the sky like Husker Du were playing punk tetris with your soul, have you ever seen a storm raging far away in the plains? Wipers are it.

Wipers- Youth of America

First listened at Art for Spastics, incandescent respect for Dj Rick.

I have always appreciated the long burning viciousness of legendary hardcore metal beasts Fucked Up although, when in THAT mood I prefer faster and shorter stuff, say the berserk belting of people like Municipal Waste...Well, change of gears here,'Age of the Pig', included in their new 12'', goes somewhere else, somewhere beautiful and ugly and dark and mindblowing I can only struggle to define, what about conceptual psyche stoner metal disco opera about violence against women, as Dan says, it's got even movements, or NEU!, Black Flag, Black Mountain and Young People rendezvousing with Valerie Solanas on a motorway cafe and going on some sort of ultra-violent revolutionary rampage across the plains which ends with the archetypical Thelma and Louise situation only they fucking FLY over the abyss like Noise Pterodactyls.

Fucked Up- Age of the Pig

You just need to buy the record & purify your soul, it's definitively one of the most impressive things I've heard this year.

NOW TONIGHT TUESDAY GO TO THESE BIG PARTY DROP THE LIME /CURSES! AKA FUCKING RULINGDOM**SO LOUD! 20JFG SPANK DA NI NI WOOOOO NI DI DI DI DI WO WO, erm,

PUNK
