Orange Box On PS3? Broken

PS3 owners, you should have seen the warning signs. First one: that this is a multi-platform release being ported to the PS3. Uh-oh. Second one: that said PS3 version's been delayed while PC and 360 owners have been blowing up Striders and over-using cake jokes to within an inch of their life. So it should be little/no surprise that when 1UP got their hands on the PS3 version of The Orange Box, they found it...largely awful. So awful, in fact, at times it was "downright unplayable". Chief culprit are the framerates in the three HL2 releases, particularly in outdoor/vehicle sections, which at times slows to a single-digits crawl. Ungh. You'll not kill any Combine at 9FPS, Gordon. On the bright side, though, Portal seems fine!

Sony Pooh-Poohs PlayStation Phone Rumours (Again)

We feel dizzy. Seems every month or two we get a rumour on a PlayStation Phone, we get near-confirmation, then we get denial. All build-up, no happy ending. Last time was...earlier this week, with Sony exec Jim Ryan saying the idea was "definitely plausible". Today, we get Sony saying he was "misquoted":
Jim Ryan was misquoted in his interview and we do not have any plans at the moment for a PlayStation phone.
Not a denial, then, just no plans "at the moment". Does this merry-go-round have season tickets? We feel a bit cheated having to pay every single time we jump on.

Advance Wars: Days Of Ruin? Maybe not. Just got a presser from Nintendo, and on its release schedule it's got the title of the upcoming Advance Wars DS title listed instead as Advance Wars: Dark Conflict. Not that there was anything wrong with Days of Ruin, but Dark Conflict is a little snappier.

Gabe Wants Steam To Have Every Game Ever Made

Because when it comes to ambition, there's no point in going in all half-arsed. Speaking with Rock, Paper, Shotgun, Valve's Gabe Newell has said he doesn't want just a few games on Steam. He doesn't even want a lot of games. Nope. Guy wants all of them. Every PC game, ever made, on Steam:
Oh yeah, I expect we'll go back in time and eventually pretty much every game that's ever been available will be on there 24/7.
Every game? Ever? Even Privateer? Even Colonisation? Why not. Think I just made it abundantly clear there's an excitable market for that old junk.

Mystery Devs Working On Unreal Engine 3 For Wii

Epic aren't bringing the Unreal Engine 3 to the Wii. Never were, never will. Doesn't mean it's not going to happen, though! In an interview with Kikizo, Epic talisman Mark Rein has said that while they themselves would never dream of such a thing, he knows there's someone out there, somewhere, taking a crack at it:
I know one of our licensee who's giving it a shot. It's their own port, in the same way Ubisoft brought Unreal Engine 2 to the Wii.
Hrm. Best of luck to them. But honestly, the Wii? I love the thing, but you can't actually get blood out of a stone. That's just a saying!

Kotaku's 2007 Gift Guide of Obscene Nicety and Sublime Naughtyness

pigeonisland.jpg

Every year the holidays roll around and every year I promise myself, the rest of Kotaku Tower and sometimes even the readers that we're going to get off our collective asses and actually write up a gift guide. But the thing is, I hate gift guides. The hate, I think, comes from spending 12 years of my life working at newspapers where the list, the gift guide, the annual must-write-story was a thing to dread and hate. This was because as a newspaper writer you weren't allowed to buck any trends or come up with neat ideas for things like gifts, instead you had to roll out the list of things people already knew about and polish them up to make them sound new and interesting.

While I suppose you could say the same about this, our first real gift guide, I'd like to think that it holds some surprises and delights. Personally, I've already started bugging everyone I know to pool their money together and buy me Pigeon Island (Fahey's find) for my next 50 Christmases and Birthdays rolled into one.

If a $400,000 private island in the Caribbean isn't your cup of tea (and it better not be because it's MINE, ALL MINE), you're still bound to find something that tickles your fancy among this list of goodies complies by all of Kotaku's writers, be it a Japanese Gesture book or a life-sized Gundam.

Kotaku's 2007 Video Game Wish List

cubeclose.jpg

Earlier this week we posted our first ever, sorta, Gaming Gift Guide. While the G3 was packed full of all sorts of goodies, mostly game related, but not totally, it was completely missing any actual games. That's because we had a different idea for listing out which video games would make good gifts and why.

This year, the problem isn't finding a game to give, it's figuring out which of the more than 50 or so top-tier titles you should pick to hand out or ask for. So instead of compiling a list of the 50 games and saying, go make up your own mind, we decided to mix things up a bit. Each of the Kotaku writers were given $300 in fictitious Kotaku Kash to spend on themselves. We figured that way the writers would be completely honest about which games they would buy or ask for if they were limited to a still rather high budget.

Hit the jump to see the lists and explanations, then feel free to join in with how you'd spend a $300 gaming gift card.

RE: Morrissey Or Corgan? The Eternal Question

Happy Thanksgiving! I hope you are enjoying the festive day. While Japan has caught on to Halloween somewhat recently, Thanksgiving is a big mystery. A really, really big mystery.

Last year for Thanksgiving, I went to Subway and got a turkey sandwich. That was depressing. This year, I ate spaghetti. Anyway! Luke and I have put up a couple posts, so if you are around, feel free to do the same. Otherwise, eat some turkey and pumpkin pie for me.

Oh, and to answer your eternal question: Ian Brown.

Giant Crabs Might Have Been Real (We're Sorry, Sony)

giantcrab.jpg You all remember. Genji, "historical accuracy", giant crabs, massive damage. We all had a chuckle (some even a chortle) at Sony's expense. But what if giant crabs were real? And not "giant" as in "oh, my, it's as big as your head", giant as in "run, before it eats you and your fleshy human babies". This BBC story, about the discovery of the fossil of an 8-foot scorpion, reports that the team researching the find claims:
The size of the beast suggests that spiders, insects, crabs and similar creatures were much larger in the past than previously thought.
Crabs! And crabs are a lot bigger than scorpions, so if we had an 8-foot scorpion, that's one...massive crab. Sorry.

Will Casual Gaming Hurt Hardcore Gaming?

cvh.png Over at GoNintendo, they're running a two-week long feature called "Casual v. Hardcore: Opinions of the Gaming Industry." The question put forth was: "Is casual gaming a threat to hardcore gaming or will it help it in the long run?" My response:

What does hardcore gaming mean? Do we have a similar term for books? Do people say, "He's a hardcore reader"? I guess they'd say so-and-so is a bookworm. But "hardcore"? It's such a severe term. If games are going to be a truly dominate form of entertainment, they need to be approachable. Approachable doesn't mean a lesser game experience in any way, but rather, a streamlined one. That should actually help gaming!

Zelda, Nintendogs DS Bundles Not For UK, Australia

Those new DS bundles sure are nice. Especially the Zelda one. It's especially nice. All the more pity, then, that Nintendo fans and DS collectors in the UK and Australia will be forced to import them, with both Nintendo branches stating they have no plans to introduce the consoles. Yeah, there's always the chance those plans may come later, but PAL gaming breeds nothing if not pessimism.

Super Mario...Sisters?

Companies file for trademarks all the time. Sometimes it's to genuinely trademark a product, sometimes it's to stop others from trademarking a product, and sometimes it's just in case. This is a "just in case" filing. Just in case Nintendo went mascot mad. On February 27, 1990, the company filed a trademark application for an electronic game program called "SUPER MARIO SISTERS". What ever could it have been? We can only guess, because the company decided to abandon any and all plans for an inaugural female spin-off/gender-confused platformer/Giana Sisters-beater a year later, in December 1991. Still...interesting! For those further interested, there's a grab of the filing after the jump. more »

Mass Effect Ban or Not, Singapore Authority "Get Creative"

Just because Singapore is strict doesn't mean its dull and conservative. Take Mass Effect, for example. The country's Media Development Authority banned Mass Effect for alien lesbian sex, but then the MDA retracted its ban. See, they're open minded! But what kind of governing body is the MDA? Is it a bunch of stiff, dull Singaporeans in business suits. Yes. Yes, it is. However! They are stiff, dull folks who enjoy making rap videos about how creative they are. Game & Watch Explains DS TV Tuner's Popularity

Sure, Japan's DS TV Tuner looks nice enough, and sounds just as nice. Portable TV, a screen you can scribble dicks and moustaches on, it's all good. Doesn't explain why Japan went bonkers for them, though. This, however, does: it turns out when you get the package, you don't just get a TV tuner, you get Game & Watch's Fire along with it. As a bonus, you can play it on the bottom screen while you're watching and listening to TV on the top screen.

The Sam & Max Revival (Never Say Die!)

Sam & Max creator Steve Purcell's day job? Story writer at Pixar. Purcell created the characters as a youth and went on to draw a comic strip and create a Sam & Max graphic novel. A LucasArts adventure game followed as did an animated series. Then things went south: The comics went out of print, the cartoon was canceled and LucasArts ditched the adventure game. Fast forward to the present day, where Sam & Max is experiencing a revival thanks to episodic point & click games. It's getting to the point where the games are now outshining the original comic. Says Purcell:

I still find that when people bump into me at conventions, they saw the game before they ever saw a comic.

And that's not necessarily at bad thing. Not a bad thing at all.
