Dining And Drinking

Mumbai is a two-faced city— on one hand it is surrounded with poverty and an overflowing of slums, on the other it has shooting property rates challenged by those only in New York. Both of these contradictions are reflected in the dining and drinking options as well.

Dining:

The open-air Bade Miyan at Colaba not only attracts the richest customers, but is a hangout for taxi drivers and the like. The numerous kebab shops at Muhammad Ali Road, though very modest in prices and decor, entertain the biggest hoard of food lovers in the city. But if you have a bit of money to spend, then there is no place like Mumbai. Indigo and Olive Bar & Kitchen, a few of the many designer restobars have an undisputed reputation in fine dining. And Mela, Olympia, New York, Cream Centre, Paradise, Khyber, Crepe Station, Parabola are the prime examples of the diverse and authentic cuisine available.

Of course, there is no place like the beach areas (Chowpatty and Juhu Beach) where lots of fast food vendors dish out amazing food. These are perhaps the best places to taste the Pav Bhaji, which is a specialty in Mumbai. They are also the ultimate places for trying the famous Kulfi (Indian ice-cream). If you would rather stay away from the beach areas, Kulfi Centre, Big Byte, and Bachelors Juice House are must-visits for this hand-made ice-cream.

Drinking:

Mumbai is one big watering hole. From small and dingy bars to chic pubs and nightclubs, this is one city that never wants to sleep - or at least sleeps really late. Clubs and discos are to be found largely in two areas - adjoining the business district and the western suburban areas of Bandra and Juhu. The ones situated in South Mumbai have mostly a business type clientele, apart from the rich and famous crowd. The bars in the suburbs are visited by the teenyboppers and the city's young. But weekends are a ripe time for the flux. Suburbans travel to town to visit The Ghetto and ONYX, while corporates and town residents love the easy and affordable atmosphere of Hawaiian Shack, and Club IX.

The city is also teaming with lounge bars/hookah cafes: Busaba at Colaba, Mocha in Bandra and Churchgate, Marouch - the exotic bar of the belly dancers, and Mikanos in Worli, to name a few. Also, a must-visit in south Mumbai is Leopold Bar & Restaurant and Cafe Mondegar. These two have become institutions, and are packed at all times with beer drinkers and tourists. You could also spend an evening at Suzie Wong, a bar in the middle of the ocean, or Not Just Jazz By The Bay, a neat karaoke-cum-jazz kind of place.
