Dementium's Halloween Warning - Oops

Quick! Before you send your children out trick or treating, watch this special report! It could save lives! Wait...what day is it? *winces, drawing in air through gritted teeth* Awkward. Um, well it really was common sense anyway. It's a parent's job to teach their children to avoid zombies, monsters, and improptu medical examinations on Halloween night. I'm sure your remaining children will be much more prepared next year.

Gamecock Says To Preorder And Help Small Games

We always knew retailers loved pre-orders. I mean, you're giving them money to buy a product in the future—one that is often in excellent supply (at least in the big chains). But we never knew that pre-orders mattered so much to small developers. Gamecock's CEO Mike Wilson (no relation) fills us in on why the best way to support a game can be to pre-order it:
It's a really huge deal in the industry right now...[Gamestop's] pre-order program, which they base their buys off of, is so important now. It's like life or death for some of these original, independent titles.
But there's more... more »

Latest by CommentatorHatman: Pfft. Just find stores that don't charge for pre-orders. I did, and I know when a game comes out, I'm sure to have it. Usually, non-EB/Gamestop stores'll do it if they have the tech for it. more »

Gamecock To Build UK Roost

Those saucy wags over at Gamecock are expanding their Texas based business to include a UK office. In an interview with Next Generation, Gamecock founder Mike Wilson (no relation to our strapping Mark Wilson) had this to say:

We'll be so much better off having a presence over there and really controlling the marketing, PR and creative... It's mostly about us trying to give our developers the best deal we can across the PAL territories too, when doing a co-publishing deal, it's really hard to do that.

Dementium: The Ward Gameplay

From Renegade Kid and Gamecock comes a couple clips from their latest collaboration Dementium: The Ward for the DS. I have to say, after seeing these videos I'm actually kind of excited to check this game out. A certain other zombie FPS for the DS left me with a bad taste in my mouth due to it's craptastic chunky graphics, but this one doesn't look half bad. Make the jump to check out another clip. more »

third party is no party

Nintendo Says Get to the Back of the Box [Update]

Nintendo knows it. People buy Nintendo consoles to play Nintendo games. So no wonder third parties don't get much respect! Mike Wilson from developer GameCock explains the situation:

...we discovered that it's actually the letter of the law with Nintendo to put the publisher's name on the front of the box and the spine, and the developer only on the back. Obviously, this flies in the face of our philosophy of who deserves the credit, and how gamers can actually see who made the game they love or hate, and thereby develop a relationship with their favorite artists, just like authors, musicians, directors, and so on. Nintendo of America says it's a customer service issue, and they believe people might try to call the developer if they have a problem with the game, and they want them to call the publisher, who is the licensee of NOA.

Sure, it's a Good Housekeeping Seal of Approval thing, but c'mon. Seems like unnecessary branding on Nintendo's part — like they're taking credit or something.

Mushroom Men Designer Speaks

So what the hell is Mushroom Men? I've been wondering the same thing ever since the game was first announced, and now Red Fly Studio designer Ryan Mattson takes us beyond the loud, 2D teaser we posted back in June to show us the actual gameplay. The weapons creation system certainly looks intriguing, and I'm a sucker for games that put me in the role of a tiny thing in a big world. Should be interesting to see how the fungus grows leading up to its release next fall.

Fury Lands a Distribution Deal

Auran's massively multiplayer action RPG Fury just landed a distribution deal with relatively unknown publisher Elephant Entertainment, Gamecock announced today.

The deal gives Elephant exclusive retail distribution rights to the player-versus-player game. Checking out their website, it appears the publisher hasn't backed many games, but they did obtain the U.S. rights to Sword of the New World: Granado Espada.

Hit the jump for the full press release.

craving release

Gamecock Double Dates Fury And Dementium

And so the saga of Gamecock reaches fruition, as the publisher known so far for its lavish parties and devastating marches readies itself for the money shot. They've just announced the release dates for their first two games, both of which hit in October. Auran's PvP MMO Fury is slated to hit store shelves on the 9th, while Renegade Kid's survival horror FPS for the Nintendo DS has gone the way of so many horror titles before it, hitting store shelves on Halloween.
"It's been a blast getting Gamecock off the ground, but it's even more exciting to have our first two games coming out this October," said Mike Wilson, Grand Champeen of Gamecock. "These games showcase what developers - given the freedom to create - can accomplish. Both Auran and Renegade Kid are visionaries, and have stayed true to creating games that are fresh and that keep your adrenaline pumping."
Looking forward to finally getting my hands on some Gamecock. Um. more »

Fury - Life Versus Level Grinding

This video advertisement for Auran's Fury has a pretty clear message to deliver. If you play World of Warcraft, your hot girlfriend will totally have sex with the pizza guy in your apartment. It doesn't help that the pizza guy is way hotter than you. You should work on that. While the clip tries to only subtly hint at WoW, there is a pretty clear shot of the spine of one the strategy guides that makes it rather obvious who they're sniping at here. Crafty. Extra marketing points for the tagline, "Waste Enemies. Not Time." Unfortunately marketing points were deducted for making me no more likely to hit up the game's free preview this weekend and more apt to get a part-time job delivering pizza.

Gamecock Showing Fury Off To The World

Aussie devs Auran are proud of their MMO deathmatcher Fury. As are publishers Gamecock. So they're going to show it off to you, the world, in a few weeks with a 60-hour demo/beta/thing. Beginning at noon on Friday July 27, Texas time, there are 200,000 keys to give away on a first-come, first-served basis. I had a go on this at GO3 a few months back. It felt like playing Jedi Knight II multiplayer. If it was an MMO. Which if anything is...unique!

March of the Unfit Gaming Press

Why does this man hate freedom? Perhaps it is because after four days of rushing about from appointment to appointment, walking countless miles across the city of Santa Monica, the promise of a party finds him walking a long and lonely mile down a deserted beachfront along with hundreds of others doing exactly the same thing, which technically negates the deserted and lonely bits I know, but it's my narrative and you can't have it. At roughly 5PM on Friday, July 13th, Gamecock and a couple hundred friends mourned the death of the annual E3 'make the gaming press walk around for days' festival with another mile of walking. more »

Gamecock Eulogizes E3 With Up In Smoke Funeral Procession

After E3 proper shut down, the Gamecock crew held its "Up In Smoke" ceremony to commemorate and eulogize the Death Of E3. Not the end. The death. It was all scheduled to kick off at 4:20 PM—zany, no?—but in reality, finally found the energy to mobilize around 5. After a few keg pumped beers, watching various parade goers get made up and affixing our black Gamecock armbands, we started the one mile procession down to Venice beach, repeatedly answering two questions. One: "What's going on?" Answer: "It's a 'funeral' for E3." Two: "What's E3?" It was hot, long and at certain moments, things were throbbing.

I somehow managed to snap an appropriate 69 photos from the event, all of which are in our gallery. Mike Fahey's at the beer garden afterparty right now, drowning his sorrows. I'm sure he'll have more tales to tell for us later.
