Life Peerage

24 July 2007

The Queen has been graciously pleased to signify her intention of conferring a Peerage of the United Kingdom for Life upon the Right Honourable Sir Robin (Berry) Janvrin GCB KCVO on his retirement as Private Secretary to The Queen.

This recommendation for a non-party-political life peerage was made by the Prime Minister. The House of Lords Appointments Commission is responsible for recommending non-party-political appointments to the House of Lords. However, the Prime Minister continues to nominate direct to The Queen a limited number of distinguished public servants on their retirement. The number of nominations under this arrangement is currently limited to ten in any one Parliament.

Note for Editors

Sir Robin joined the Royal Navy in 1964 and the Diplomatic Service in 1975. He was First Secretary at the UK Delegation to NATO from 1976 to 1978 and New Delhi from 1981 to 1984 and was promoted Counsellor in 1985.

He was appointed Press Secretary to the Queen in 1987; Assistant Private Secretary to the Queen in 1990; Deputy Private Secretary in 1996 and has been Private Secretary to the Queen and Keeper of the Queen's Archives since 1999 and will retire in September 2007.
