  • LIGHTS OUT!

    October 17, 2007 0 Comments

Grassroots community group Lights Out America is coordinating events to help fight climate change.

On Saturday March 29, 2008 all across America the group is encouraging cities to turn off their lights for 1 hour between 8:00 and 9:00 pm to save energy and to raise awareness about the amount of energy the U.S. uses and the impact it has on our environment.

    From lightsoutamerica.org

Today, the United States consumes more energy and emits more greenhouse gases than any other country in the world. Our nation’s growing appetite for energy must be controlled to protect our planet from the effects of the climate crisis.

If you live in San Francisco or Los Angeles we encourage you to participate in citywide Lights Out events THIS SATURDAY Oct. 20th from 8 to 9 pm.

Other cities participating on Saturday or on March 28, 2008 are: Atlanta, Boston, Boulder, Chicago, Denver, Miami, New York, Seattle, Washington D.C.

Visit lightsoutamerica.org for more information and to organize an event in your city.

    Our Goals
    1. Continue to aid the rebuilding process in the U.S. Gulf Coast following hurricanes Katrina and Rita
    2. Work to weaken and decelerate future natural disasters by raising awareness about the environmental consequences of climate change and our responsibility to reduce greenhouse gasses and develop alternate, renewable forms of energy.

    Our Mission

To respond to natural disasters as they occur to help victims recover and rebuild, with an emphasis on housing, education programs and resources. MUSIC FOR RELIEF also recognizes the environmental consequences of global warming, which has demonstrated the capability to accelerate and strengthen certain types of natural disasters. Therefore the second goal of MUSIC FOR RELIEF is to prevent and decrease future natural disasters by reducing greenhouse gasses, seeking renewable forms of energy and educating the public about climate change.

Long term, MUSIC FOR RELIEF is committed to expand efforts to a global scale and have the resources to be able to mobilize the music community and music fans to help various causes throughout the world should the need arise.

Our Partners To achieve our goal of helping to rebuild in the gulf coast MFR has formed a partnership with HABITAT FOR HUMANITY. Habitat 3 Habitat for Humanity’s gulf recovery efforts began immediately after Hurricane Katrina hit and then expanded after Hurricane Rita, to help low-income families in Louisiana, Mississippi, Texas and Alabama build permanent housing. More than 1,000 Habitat hurricane-response homes built or were under construction as of May 2007. More than 50,000 volunteers have worked through Habitat for Humanity to carry out recovery efforts. On May 21 in St. Bernard Parish, La., Habitat for Humanity raised walls on its 1,000th hurricane-response home with former U.S. President Jimmy Carter and his wife, Rosalynn. Habitat also raised walls on its 1,001st home to signify the ongoing, long-term effort. Habitat for Humanity’s Gulf Recovery efforts currently requires 1,000 volunteers PER WEEK!!! The work in the Gulf Coast continues as does Habitat’s work in 1,700 communities across the United States and Canada and in more than 90 countries around the world.

To achieve our goal of combating climate change MFR has formed a partnership with AMERICAN FORESTS. American Forests AMERICAN FORESTS helps people improve the environment with trees and forests. It is the nations oldest nonprofit citizens conservation organization. AMERICAN FORESTS is a world leader in tree planting for environmental restoration, a pioneer in the science and practice of urban forestry and a primary communicator of the benefits of trees and forests. AMERICAN FORESTS helps people plan and implement local actions to restore and maintain healthy ecosystems and communities. American Forests is on the World Wide Web at www.americanforests.org.

Background Established in 2005 to provide aid for those affected by the tsunami tragedy in South Asia, the idea for MUSIC FOR RELIEF originated amongst the members of the band Linkin Park who wanted to do something to help the victims. The idea was that if they made a donation, and then asked their musician peers and their fans to make a donation as well, a huge impact could be made in assisting relief efforts. With this in mind they started reaching out to others in the music community to get involved and became the founders of MUSIC FOR RELIEF.
