Mass Effect Special Coming to SCI FI One Day Late

Until Mass Effect is released on Nov. 20th and faces our impossibly high geek expectations, we can only comb over press releases for nuggets of missed goodness. That's how we realized that we'd completely missed the announcement that SCI FI, who has partnered like crazy with the game already, will be airing the 30-minute special Sci vs. Fi: Mass Effect on launch day. As we willingly inject ourselves with advertisement for a game we could otherwise be playing, we'll see:

...more in-depth information about the game, exclusive interviews and exciting behind-the scenes footage.
While this is a really neat idea and many of us will still tune in (via DVR), why wouldn't SCI FI run the special before we're playing the game, like on the 19th?

Cory Barlog's Cryptic Blog Entry

We know Cory Barlog is leaving Sony Santa Monica, but what is he doing next? About an hour ago he posted two cryptic images on his blog. One is a screen shot of the failed Atari E.T. game, and the second one is a picture of the cast of the Facts of Life. What is he trying to say? It's the facts of life that movie games have sucked? Or do these images not tell us anything about where the God of War II director is headed next? What do you think? My sources tell me we will be hearing a lot more about Cory's plans in the near future.

Gamecock Endorses Colbert For President

Stephen Colbert might have been turned down by South Carolina Democrats, but there is one group that vows to stand by their man's run in the 2008 presidential election. Those wacky guys at Gamecock Media have come forth publicly to offer Colbert their support.
"After conducting extensive polling and scrutinizing all the candidates' stances on various issues, we came to the conclusion that Stephen Colbert has shown strong leadership and best represents the interests of the video game playing community," said Gamecock CEO and Grand Champeen Mike Wilson. "Stephen Colbert had Will Wright on his show and he pummeled Nancy Pelosi's Mii in Wii Boxing. These decisive actions have earned our vote."
The press release goes on to call Colbert funnier than Clinton and Romney, which is a point I can't really argue. more »

Cake And Lies Below Your Thighs

wcctat.jpg We have witnessed the coming of the Weighted Companion Cube cake, as foretold by prophecy. Now the cycle is complete, as we witness the joining of cube and cake on the flesh of the one described in the ancient texts. And lo would appear a man, or possibly woman who holdeth leg hairs sacred, whose shins bear the ultimate truth of the universe. I'm pretty sure those are shins. You know what folks? The guy who said a picture is worth a thousand words had more descriptive pictures in mind. A paragraph of text along with a picture is worth like...a jillion words. Otherwise we have to speculate, and you wouldn't like us when we speculate. Thanks for the pic, Niki!

Parental Control

360 Family Timer Official, Jerry Rice Approves

parentaltimer.jpg The children at the Stuart-Hobson Middle School in Washington D.C. today got a real treat, as Microsoft Entertainment & Devices President Robbie Bach was joined by Parent Teacher Association President Warlene Gary and Super Bowl champion Jerry Rice to unveil new parental tools as part of the second year of the "Safety is no game. Is your family set?" campaign. One of those tools is the new 360 Family Timer, which allows parents to set a limit on the time their children spend gaming on Microsoft's console. I'm sure that went over well with the kids. Also included in the initiative is PACT, which is a family contract that allows parents and children to agree on the amount of access they have online and the amount of parental involvement in their gaming life. PACT is available at http://www.xbox.com/isyourfamilyset, and conveniently crumbles into a wadded ball of paper later on whenever it becomes inconvenient for the parties involved. more »

cod4mobile.jpg Mobile Gaming

Call Of Duty 4 Mobile

Sure, you could spend hours playing Call of Duty 4 on your PS3, PC, or Xbox 360, marveling at the graphics and immersing yourself in your role as a modern-day warrior, but you'll have to restock on food sometime, and then what? Well yes, there's a DS version, but say your DS breaks. And your gaming laptop. And you're out of cash so you can't order in. No, they don't accept credit cards. I know it's barbaric. Well then Glu Mobile has got you covered! Call of Duty 4 is out for the mobile phone, delivering squad-based action to the tiny screen. All the elements are here: squad-based gameplay, modern weapons, sniping, varied mission types, etc. Plus it's the cheapest version of the game around, which is definitely a plus. Unfortunately it won't run on my new phone, which is apparently a music phone and not a gaming phone, but that's hardly Glu's fault. I just suck at picking phones. Education

Learning With Pokemon

masterthescience.jpg For years Pokemon has been leaching away effectiveness from the learning process for school children around the country, so it's about time they gave something back. The National Institute of Aerospace and Nortel LearniT have teamed up with Nintendo to offer free, Pokemon-themed lesson plans to aid elementary and middle school teachers in capturing all of their students' attention. There are a wide variety of subjects available, from space travel to universal expansion, all featuring that distinctive Pokemon flavor.
"We're honored to have our characters take what sometimes may seem like dry topics and help make them come alive for students," says George Harrison, Nintendo of America's senior vice president of marketing and corporate communications. "The collaboration provides an opportunity for children to learn 21st century science using 21st century tools with characters they're familiar with."

kotaku_phasescreen.jpg Interview

Does Phase Hint Where Rock Band is Going?

Harmonix is a company all about the music. Don't believe me? Well consider this: When you walk into the men's room at the Cambridge, MA headquarters there's a ghetto blaster on the floor so you can listen to tunes while you do your business.

We're all eagerly anticipating Rock Band, but yesterday morning Harmonix delivered one more thing: A surprise iPod music game called Phase. So I jumped on the phone with lead producer Kasson Crooker, who told me about whether Steve Jobs has played it, if we can expect an iPhone version, and, most interesting of all, whether the beat-detecting technology in Phase could soon be applied to a game like Rock Band.

Kasson: We have soundtracks, downloadable content, and this is the next step: re-experiencing your own music in a game. We wouldn't be able to separate out all the instruments and what not, but I think you'll see this kind of technology used in other Harmonix products down the road.
Read the full interview with Kasson after the jump.

Which Cube Games Would Have Worked Better On Wii?

Interesting feature up on Next-Gen exploring which GameCube games could/would have worked better on Wii. After all, most Cube games didn't sell too well, and titles like Res 4 are showing that a rebirth on the Wii can do wonders to a game's sales tally. So what's their list look like? Predictable. But also...reassuring. Animal Crossing, Wind Waker, Pikmin, Super Monkey Ball...all solid choices, but what about Mario Kart? Actually throwing the bananas might have given the gunner something to do. Or Geist? Could have put some decent Wii controls in there, people might actually have remembered it. Same goes for Harvest Moon. I could go on all night, but they did put Wind Waker in, and that's enough to keep me happy.

Announcement

This Year's Funde Razor is Twice as Good

funderazor4.jpg

Just a heads up: Joel Johnson, Brian Crecente and Brian Crecente's hair will be putting on their officially blessed Child's Play fundraiser in two fabulous cities. On Wednesday, December 12th in Brooklyn and Denver, kind hearted and generous gamers will gather to play Guitar Hero and Rock Band, drink some beer and help raise money to benefit hospitalized children for the holidays.

The Brooklyn competition will take place at Barcade (home of the World Famous Kotaku Party 2007) and in Denver, rockers will attend at the glamorous and exciting Walnut Room. In both locations, a donation of ten dollars (either at the door or through raffle tickets depending on the location) could net you a host of currently unannounced fabulous door prizes. All proceeds from bothe events will go to benefit Penny Arcade's Child's Play Charity. Last year's Brooklyn event raised over $4,200. This year, let's totally kick the shit outta that total and raise moar.

Joel, who heads up Boing Boing Gadgets, will be handling the Brooklyn bash, while Crecente will be heading up the Denver one. Likewise, Crecente's hair will help with the Denver event. (That, and drink too much beer.) Read more about all this in the link below and help a good cause rock out.

Wolfenstein Movie Cools Its Jets

Wolfenstein is Roger Avary's "dream film". One he's going to have to dream about for a little longer, sadly, as the Hollywood writer's strike has hit the film's production. Even though the script's mostly finished, Avary says:
[I'm] almost done with the script and am proud of it, but everything as far as the production date and that kind of thing won't be decided on until after all this [is] over. And I fully support the strike.
Bugger. Was really looking forward to 126 minutes of GIs v Nazis v vampires v robots. You can't mess up a movie like that. You just can't.

Do You Have A Gamedar?

In case you missed the memo, we'll bring you up to speed: Just because women don't have penises, doesn't mean they aren't gamers. What's more, women in college play video games. USC student paper Daily Trojan profiles some female co-eds who are totally into games, blah, blah. Swell! That's ground we've covered before, so we'll skip that. Instead, we bring you this nugget:

Celeste McWhorter could probably identify [fellow female player] Soriano in the middle of Trousdale. She said she has gamedar, like gaydar for gamers, she informed me with authority.
