History - 1980 to 1989
1980
David G. Mohla becomes Supervisor of the Deschutes National
Forest (1980 - 1986)
May 18, 1980 - Eruption of Mt. St. Helens removed north side
of mountain and killed 57 people. Episodic eruptions continued
till 1986.
1981
April 28, 1981 - Deschutes National Forest obtained Lava River
Cave in land exchange with State of Oregon.
September 1981 - USGS geothermal test hole hits temperature
of 509° F. at 3,058 feet east of Big Obsidian Flow. Hole produces
steam for 20 hours during testing.
The movie"St. Helens " filmed on Deschutes N.F. using Mt. Bachelor as a stand in for Mt. St. Helens.
1983
The movies "Up The Creek " and "Survival of the Fittest" filmed on Deschutes N.F.
1986
Norman Arseneault becomes Supervisor of the Deschutes National
Forest (1986 - 1990)
1987
Committee formed to create a national monument at Newberry Volcano.
1988
The 20th Annual Field Trip of the Pacific Cell of the Friends
of the Pleistocene was headquartered at Little Fawn Campground.
The trip looked at the Mt. Bachelor Volcanic Chain and the Three
Sisters.
1989
Summer 1989 - New trail constructed on Big Obsidian Flow at
Newberry.
November 1989 - Newberry Monument legislation introduced in
Congress.
