History - Prehistoric
1,200,000 Years Ago
- Early flows from Newberry Volcano flow down Crooked River Canyon
to present day Round Butte Dam.
500,000 Years Ago
- Eruption of Tepee Draw Tuff results in formation of first caldera
at Newberry. Later eruptions enlarge it.
24,000 Years Ago
- Maximum of the Suttle Lake Advance of the Cabot Creek Glaciation.
This is the advance that was responsible for the glacial moraines
which dam Crescent, Odell, Cultus, and Suttle Lakes.
13800 B.C.
- 15,750 years B.P. - Earliest dated human occupation of Fort
Rock Cave (13,200 C14 years B.P.). Years B.P. are years before
1950 A.D.

Cabot Creek Glaciation.
9210 B.C.
- 11,160 years B.P. - Eruptions along the East Rim Fissure (10,000
C14 years B.P.). Eruption of the South Obsidian Flow (or Buried
Flow) probably occurred about 100 years earlier.
9050 B.C.
- 11,000 years B.P. - Earliest dated human occupation of Newberry
Crater at Paulina Lake site (9,920 C14 years B.P.).

structures in the western hemisphere at the Paulina Lake site
(8,500 C14 years B.P.).
5680 B.C.
- 7,630 years B.P. - The eruption of Mt. Mazama to form Crater
Lake deposits two feet of pumice over much of the Newberry's Northwest
Rift Zone and Newberry Crater (6,845 C14 years B.P.). Areas of
the Crescent Ranger District were covered with as much as 10 feet
of pumice.
5320 B.C.
- 7,270 years B.P. - An eruption from beneath East Lake forms
East Lake tephra on floor of Newberry Crater (6,400 C14 years
B.P.).
5200 B.C.
- 7,150 years B.P. - Eruptions in Newberry Crater form the Central
Pumice Cone and the Interlake Obsidian Flow.
5000 B.C.
- 6,950 years B.P. - Eruptions along the Northwest Rift Zone form
Lava Butte, Mokst Butte, and the flows of the Lava Cast Forest
area (6,100 C14 years B.P.).
3540 B.C.
- 5,490 years B.P. - Eruption along Odell Creek dams the creek
to form Davis Lake. Additional eruptions to the south form the
Black Rock Flows.
1550 B.C.
- 3,500 years B.P. - Eruptions in Newberry Crater form the East
Lake Obsidian Flows.
850 B.C.
- 2,800 years B.P. - Eruptions over a 400 year span (2,600 to
3,000 B.P.) form the Sand Mountain volcanic field.

McKenzie Pass.

Hill domes and the Newberry Flow.
