History - 2000 to 2003

 

2000

  • Leslie Weldon becomes Supervisor of the Deschutes National Forest (2000 - ??)
  • June 16, 2000 - The Deschutes and Ochoco National Forests will be combined under the leadership of one forest supervisor.
  • Summer 2000 - Reconstruction work on many facilities at Newberry Caldera including Paulina Creek Falls Overlook, Little Crater Campground, East Lake Campground, and Cinder Hill Campground.
  • Summer 2000 - Three Trappers Bridge (built in 1963) across the Deschutes River above Crane Prairie replaced with new bridge.

2001

  • August 28, 2001 - The position of Forest Supervisor for the Ochoco was reestablished.
  • Fall 2001 - The lower Tumalo Creek bridge near Skyliner Lodge was replaced with a new bridge.
  • December 2001 - The old lookout tower (built in 1934) on Black Butte collapsed due to snow and wind.

2002

  • July 9, 2002 - The Eyerly Fire begins on the Warm Springs Indian Reservation along the Metolius arm of Lake Billy Chinook. During an 18 day period the fire burned over 23,000 acres of Reservation, Deschutes N.F. and private lands until containment on July 26. The fire burned into the Three Rivers Subdivision where 18 homes were destroyed.
  • July 13, 2002 - The 747 Fire begins in the Black Canyon Wilderness on the Ochoco N.F. During a 27 day period the fire burned nearly 17,000 acres of National Forest and private lands until containment on August 8.
  • July 23, 2002 - The Cache Mountain Fire begins on the Deschutes N.F. During a 10 day period the fire burned nearly 3900 acres of National Forest and private lands until containment on August 1. The fire burned into Black Butte Ranch where 2 homes were destroyed.
  • September 2002 - Larry Timchak became supervisor of the Ochoco National Forest

2003

  • June 28, 2003 - The Davis Fire begins on the Crescent District of the Deschutes N.F. During a 9 day period the fire burned about 21,200 acres until containment July 6. The fire destroyed the West Davis Campground and damaged the East Davis Campground.
  • July 5, 2003 - The Link Fire begins on the Sisters District of the Deschutes N.F. During a 9 day period the fire burned almost 3600 acres until containment on July 13.
  • July 23, 2003 - The 18 Fire begins on the Bend/Fort Rock District of the Deschutes N.F., just south of Bend. During a 4 day period the fire burned about 3800 acres until containment on July 26.
  • August 19, 2003 - The Booth and Bear Butte Fires begain on the Sisters District of the Deschutes N.F. The fires burned together on September 4. During a 39 day period the fires burned nearly 91,000 acres on the Deschutes and Willamette N.F.s, the Warm Springs Reservation and state and private lands until containment on September 26. Over 40,000 acres were within the Mt. Jefferson Wilderness.
  • August 21, 2003 - President Bush visited central Oregon. His visit included an aerial tour of the Booth and Bear Butte Fires, a speech at the Deschutes County Fairgrounds, and an overnight stay in the Sunriver area.

2004

  • November 2004 - Deschutes Supervisor's Office closes office at 1645 Hwy. 20 E and moves into temporary quarters.

2005

  • May 2, 2005 - Deschutes Supervisor's Office opens new office at 1001 SW Emkay Drive.
