1990
- Jose Cruz becomes Supervisor of the Deschutes National Forest
(1990 - 1993)
- November 1990 - President George Bush signed Public Law 101-522
creating Newberry National Volcanic Monument, which includes Newberry
Crater, Lava Cast Forest Geological Area, Lava River Cave, and
Lava Butte Geological Area.
- The movie "Grand Tour" filmed on Deschutes N.F.
1991
- June 30, 1991 - Newberry National Volcanic Monument dedicated.
- The movie "Homeward Bound: The Incredible Journey " filmed on Deschutes N.F.
1992
- Summer 1992 - Archaeologist excavating at Paulina Lake site
discovered one of the oldest known domestic structures in the
western hemisphere.
- The movies "Cry in the Wild II: White Wolves" and "Even Cowgirls Get the Blues" filmed on Deschutes N.F.
1993
- Sally Collins becomes Supervisor of the Deschutes National Forest
(1993 - 2000).
- February 1993 - Natural gas pipeline construction through Newberry
National Volcanic Monument exposed a horizontal tree mold in Gas-Line
Flows east of Lava Butte. A portion of the tree mold was recovered
and placed on display at Lava Lands Visitor Center.
- August 1993 - Reconstruction of Road 21 exposed more than 45
charcoal logs in the Paulina Lake Ashflow between Newberry Group
Camp and Little Crater Campground.
- September 1993 - Reconstruction of Road 21 exposed more than
20 tree molds at the base of the East Lake Tephra near East Lake
Campground.
1994
- July 1994 - Environmental Impact Statement (EIS) completed for
Newberry Geothermal Pilot Project.
- August 1994 - Environmental Impact Statement (EIS) completed
for Newberry National Volcanic Monument Comprehensive Management
Plan.
- The movies "McKenna" and "The Four Diamonds" filmed on Deschutes N.F.
1996
- May 1996 - Deschutes National Forest joins the World Wide Web.
1997
- The movie "The Postman" filmed on Deschutes N.F.
1998
- Summer 1998 - Road to Paulina Peak (originally built in 1958)
was reconstructed and surfaced with crushed rock.
1999
- Population of Bend reaches 50,000 with annexation of all land
within Urban Growth Boundary.
