History - 1990 to 1999

 

1990

  • Jose Cruz becomes Supervisor of the Deschutes National Forest (1990 - 1993)
  • November 1990 - President George Bush signed Public Law 101-522 creating Newberry National Volcanic Monument, which includes Newberry Crater, Lava Cast Forest Geological Area, Lava River Cave, and Lava Butte Geological Area.
  • The movie "Grand Tour" filmed on Deschutes N.F.

1991

  • June 30, 1991 - Newberry National Volcanic Monument dedicated.
  • The movie "Homeward Bound: The Incredible Journey " filmed on Deschutes N.F.

1992

  • Summer 1992 - Archaeologist excavating at Paulina Lake site discovered one of the oldest known domestic structures in the western hemisphere.
  • The movies "Cry in the Wild II: White Wolves" and "Even Cowgirls Get the Blues" filmed on Deschutes N.F.

1993

  • Sally Collins becomes Supervisor of the Deschutes National Forest (1993 - 2000).
  • February 1993 - Natural gas pipeline construction through Newberry National Volcanic Monument exposed a horizontal tree mold in Gas-Line Flows east of Lava Butte. A portion of the tree mold was recovered and placed on display at Lava Lands Visitor Center.
  • August 1993 - Reconstruction of Road 21 exposed more than 45 charcoal logs in the Paulina Lake Ashflow between Newberry Group Camp and Little Crater Campground.
  • September 1993 - Reconstruction of Road 21 exposed more than 20 tree molds at the base of the East Lake Tephra near East Lake Campground.

1994

  • July 1994 - Environmental Impact Statement (EIS) completed for Newberry Geothermal Pilot Project.
  • August 1994 - Environmental Impact Statement (EIS) completed for Newberry National Volcanic Monument Comprehensive Management Plan.
  • The movies "McKenna" and "The Four Diamonds" filmed on Deschutes N.F.

1996

  • May 1996 - Deschutes National Forest joins the World Wide Web.

1997

  • The movie "The Postman" filmed on Deschutes N.F.

1998

  • Summer 1998 - Road to Paulina Peak (originally built in 1958) was reconstructed and surfaced with crushed rock.

1999

  • Population of Bend reaches 50,000 with annexation of all land within Urban Growth Boundary.
