1971
July 31, 1971 - NASA Astronaut James B. Irwin (Apollo 15) placed
a small fragment of rock from Central Oregon on the Moon. The
rock came from one of the Devils Hill rhyodacite flows near Devils
Lake.

1975
September 13, 1975 - Lava Lands Visitor Center Dedicated. Col.
Stuart Roosa (command module pilot for Apollo 14 moon mission)
spoke at dedication.
The movie "Search for Sasquatch" filmed on Deschutes N.F.

Newberry Crater designated as National Natural Landmark.
The Newberry Known Geothermal Resource Area established around
Newberry Crater.
1977
May 1977 - Lava Butte dated at 6,150 C14 years old by Chitwood,
Jensen, and Groh.
