History - 1970 to 1979

 

1971

  • July 31, 1971 - NASA Astronaut James B. Irwin (Apollo 15) placed a small fragment of rock from Central Oregon on the Moon. The rock came from one of the Devils Hill rhyodacite flows near Devils Lake.

1974

  • The movies "Rooster Cogburn" and "The Apple Dumpling Gang" filmed on Deschutes N.F.

1975

  • September 13, 1975 - Lava Lands Visitor Center Dedicated. Col. Stuart Roosa (command module pilot for Apollo 14 moon mission) spoke at dedication.
  • The movie "Search for Sasquatch" filmed on Deschutes N.F.

1976

  • Newberry Crater designated as National Natural Landmark.
  • The Newberry Known Geothermal Resource Area established around Newberry Crater.

1977

  • May 1977 - Lava Butte dated at 6,150 C14 years old by Chitwood, Jensen, and Groh.
  • The movie "Hot Lead & Cold Feet" filmed on Deschutes N.F.

1978

  • The movies "The Secret of the Lost Valley " and "How the West was Won " filmed on Deschutes N.F.

1979

  • September 1979 - Many participants of the Pacific Northwest American Geophysical Union Meeting visited Newberry Volcano on field trips.
