Medical Oxygen Safety In The Home

Please remember the following safety tips:

Caretakers PLEASE:

  • Seek medical intervention to assist the patient to stop smoking

  • Make sure there is a working smoke alarm in the patient’s room and/or living area

  • Remove ALL smoking materials from the patient’s room or where the patient may roam while using oxygen

  • Enforce the NO SMOKING rule for the patient as well as visitors

Patients, if you are on oxygen:

  • ALWAYS follow the manufacturer’s recommendations for the use and care of oxygen equipment

  • NEVER smoke while oxygen is in use

  • Do not use the stove or oven while oxygen is in use

  • NEVER go near an open flame such as a kerosene heater, candle or fireplace while using oxygen equipment

Improper use can be fatal!
