Frequently asked Questions
-
Why does a Wichita Fire Department unit respond to a medical emergency when there is no fire?
This allows faster response to an emergency, better use of staffing, and most importantly, expeditious care to patients. Most Firefighters are certified to the Emergency Medical Technician level or higher. This program allows the nearest fire unit to quickly respond (generally less than 3 minutes) to a medical emergency, allowing the initiation of life saving techniques, yet always backed up by an advanced life support unit (EMS).
-
Why are windows broken or holes cut in the roof?
As a fire burns, it moves quickly, upward then outward releasing in its path super heated toxic gases. Breaking the windows and/or cutting holes in the roof (called ventilation) stops the damaging and dangerous movement of superheated smoke and gases enabling the firefighter to fight the fire more efficiently and safely. Ultimately resulting in less damage to the structure in the long run.
-
Why do we cut holes in walls?
Holes are cut in the walls to make absolutely sure that the fire is completely out, and that there is no hidden fire inside walls or other concealed spaces. Care is taken to do the least amount of damage necessary to insure everything is safe. This critical activity has been improved immensely through the availability and use of new technology (Thermal Imaging Camera).
-
Is it possible to obtain a copy of a fire report?
Yes, however it must be at least 72 hours after the incident. A written request can be submitted to the Fire Administrative Office at 455 North Main, 11th Floor. There is also a $10.00 fee for this service.
-
Do Firefighters just sit around playing games until they are called to an emergency?
No. Career firefighters are highly trained and skilled individuals. Therefore it takes an enormous amount of time to keep each of them up to date and trained in all the disciplines Firefighters are required to know. When Firefighters are not putting out fires or being trained they are busy working in the community conducting inspections in clubs, daycare centers, businesses and industries. They also help to educate citizens at block parties and children at schools.
