Mrs. Carrie Nation
Carrie Nation, prohibition crusader, first "rocked" her way into fame in 1900 when she raided the swank Carey House bar on the southwest corner of Douglas and St. Francis. She smashed the beveled back bar and hurled rocks through John Noble's "Cleopatra at the Bath". She was arrested and taken to the Wichita jail. While in jail Mrs. Nation wrote a letter to Governor W. E. Stanley, a Wichitian on personal stationary provided to her by Chief of Police G. T. Cubbon. The letter read:
Governor Stanley
Dear Sir,
I want to see you. Please call at once, I am Co. Pres. W.C.T.U. of Barber County. I am detained unlawfully of my liberty. If you can not come to see me send for me forthwith and oblige a grandmother and a Christian.
Mrs. Carrie Nation
