Why are my details so important?

It is very important that you provide accurate information when registering and that you keep them up to date, because:

  • If you ever forget your username or password, we may need to confirm your identity using the information you entered when you registered.
  • Many of the services we provide will be personalised specifically for you using the registration details you provide.

I'm already a Fairfax Digital member – Do I need to register?

In addition to being a Fairfax Digital member, you will need to register for full access to these websites:

  • The Sydney Morning Herald (smh.com.au)
  • The Age (theage.com.au)
  • Rugby Heaven (rugbyheaven.com.au)
  • Realfooty (realfooty.com.au)

The registration process is simple; just enter your existing username and password in the member box and a pre-filled registration page will appear. Complete the missing details and you will become a registered user of smh.com.au, theage.com.au, realfooty.com.au and rugbyheaven.com.au. Remember you will only need to register once for these sites.

Is there a fee to use this site?

No, there is no fee to register for smh.com.au, theage.com.au, rugbyheaven.com.au or realfooty.com.au.

Do I have to register every time I want to read a story?

No, you only need to register once. A cookie will then recognise you each time you return to the website and bypass the registration process, it is therefore important to NOT delete the cookies from your computer after registering.

To enhance your online experience, we will allow the first story you click on to be accessed without requiring registration – we call this the 'one Article free' rule. When you view the next article, you will be required to register.

What sections of the site do not require registration?

You do not need to register to view the home page or index pages, the classified ads or shopping sections of the site. Those sections are as follows:

  • drive.com.au: The ultimate automotive site and easy way to advertise your car for sale, whether online, in print or both.
  • mycareer.com.au: Offers information about employers of choice and provides the essential forum for job seekers and recruiters to interact.

  • Goodshoppingguide.com.au: Provides access to carefully selected retailers who offer quality products in a secure transactional environment.

Can I access the home page without registering?

Yes, you can access the home page and index pages of Fairfax Digital websites without registering.

I am using multiple computers – Do I need to register more than once?

No. You have a single account that belongs to you, and you may use it from any machine connected to the Internet. You will be required to login the first time you use the second computer.

How do I register?

To register, please complete and submit the short registration form. Once you have successfully registered, you will be able to access all articles immediately and you will receive a confirmation email with your login details that you should keep for reference.

I can't see the security code

If you cannot see the security code, the reason is usually because the image is blocked by ad blocking or firewall software that mistakenly thinks the image is an advertisement. To remedy this, either allow ads to be shown on the registration page, or disable your ad blocking software while you register.

I've registered, but I have to log in to read every article

If the system is asking you to log in to read every article, our server is unable to set a "cookie" which allows our site to recognise you as a registered user. This is caused by security settings that block cookies, or by firewall or internet security software that blocks cookies. If you are using a firewall or internet security software, please allow cookies to be set from the Fairfax network of sites.

I get an error saying "redirect limit exceeded"

This occurs in Netscape based browsers when our server is unable to set a "cookie" which allows our site to recognise you as a registered user. You will need to allow cookies from Fairfax sites to remedy this situation – instructions here.

I get an error saying "runtime error"

This occurs when your browser has cached old files that have been updated on our sites. To remedy it empty your cache – instructions here.

I've allowed cookies for the site, but I get alarms for other third party cookies when I log in

I'm using a personal firewall or internet security program (Norton Personal Firewall, Zone Alarm and others) and I keep getting alarms

Personal firewalls and internet security programs often give warnings when an internet site sets a cookie on your browser. Setting a cookie allows a site to identify a user as he or she browses the site, but has no effect on other computer functions. These programs often provide generic alarms for a range of different actions. You should check with the program vendor, to determine the correct settings for the program.

I have registered, so why is the registration page shown every time I want to read a story?

If you are logged out of our system, you may be seeing the registration page every time you want to read a story. You may be logged out of our system if you use a shared or a public computer (for example at the library).

If this happens, login to our system and continue to your article by entering your Fairfax Digital username and password in the "Already registered or a Fairfax Digital member?" box at the top right hand side of the registration page.

Once you login, you will not need to login next time you visit, provided you do not make any changes to your browser's cookie settings.

Do I need to login every time I want to use the website?

Provided you do not make any changes to your browser's cookie settings, you will not need to login every time you visit our website.This means you will be able to read news, stories and articles freely, every time you visit, without having to enter your username and password.

When you are accessing personal information and secure services (such as making a purchase), we will always ask for your password as verification. This is done to ensure that no one else can access your account and your details remain secure.

What is a Fairfax Digital member?

A Fairfax Digital member account gives you access to special offers and services such as competitions, newsletters and job or home alerts across all Fairfax Digital websites.

You may already be a Fairfax Digital member if you have used services (such as those described above) at Fairfax Digital websites. Our websites include:

I've forgotten my username and/or password – what do I do?

If you have forgotten your username or password, we can email these details to you. Go to the Forgotten password page and enter the email address you supplied. We will then email your username and password to this address.

Can I change my username?

Yes, you can change you username at any time by clicking on the 'My details' link. Remember you can use your email address as your username.

How do I change my password?

To change your password, click on the "Change details" link (located at the top right hand side). To ensure the security of your information, you will need to enter your current password.

Your current details will be displayed in the "Update your registration details" page. To change your password, follow these steps:

  1. Enter your new password. Remember, the password needs to be a minimum of 4 characters and it is case-sensitive.
  2. Re-type to confirm your new password
  3. Click on the "Save & update details" button
After you have completed the above steps, your password will be changed.

If I change my username or password, will it affect other sites I use?

You only need the one Fairfax Digital username and password to access services and offers at all our websites.

If you change your username or password, you will need to remember to use the new username or password details the next time you log in to any Fairfax Digital website.

For example, if you use Trading Room, MyCareer and Domain websites, then your new username or password will apply when you next login to these websites.

Why do you need my password again when I change my details?

When ever you are able to update or change your details, we will be asking you to enter your current password again.

How do I enable cookies on Internet Explorer

On Internet Explorer 5.0 and below, go through the following steps:

How do I enable cookies on Netscape Navigator?

On Netscape Navigator 6.0 or below, go through the following steps:

  3. Select Advanced
  4. Make sure the box marked "Accept all cookies" is checked
  5. Uncheck "Warn me before accepting cookies"

On Netscape Navigator 7.0, go through the following steps:

  1. Go to the File menu
  2. Select Preferences
  3. Select Privacy & Security
  4. Select the Cookies category
  5. If Disable cookies is selected then select another option
  6. If Enable cookies based on privacy settings is selected, hit the View button
  7. Select a lower privacy setting

How do I delete cached files?

Sometimes old files stored on your computer cause a range of problems on our sites. To delete these files, follow these steps:

Netscape 7.1

  1. Go to the Edit menu
  2. Select Preferences
  3. Double click on the 'advanced' option in the left menu
  4. Click on 'Cache'
  5. Click on 'Clear Cache'
  6. Close your browser then reopen it and browse back to the page you had a problem with.

IE6

  1. Go to the Tools menu
  2. Select Internet Options
  3. Click on 'delete files'
  4. Click on 'Ok'
  5. Close your browser then reopen it and browse back to the page you had a problem with.

IE 5

  1. Go to the Tools menu
  2. Select Internet Options
  3. Ensure the 'general' tab is selected
  4. Click on 'delete files'
  5. Click on 'Ok'
  6. Close your browser then reopen it and browse back to the page you had a problem with.

Firefox

  1. Go to the Tools menu
  2. Select Options
  3. Click on the 'Privacy' icon
  4. Click on the 'cache' heading
  5. Now click on 'clear'
  6. Close your browser then reopen it and browse back to the page you had a problem with.

Mozilla

  1. Go to the Edit menu
  2. Select Preferences
  3. Double click on the 'advanced' option in the left menu
