Fire Prevention Tips
-
Install and maintain smoke detectors. These are best installed on the ceilings adjacent to sleeping areas.
-
Avoid overloading electrical outlets. This condition can cause fires due to an excessive amount, 3 or more, appliances in an outlet.
-
Have an escape plan for every person in the house. Two escape routes per room, either through a door or a window.
-
Have a meeting place to go to if escaping from a fire. For the children’s sake, call it home base or safe zone because they will be able to identify with this concept. Your safe zone should be a place away from the home, preferably by a mailbox on the street or a neighbor’s porch.
-
If a fire occurs, Get out and Call 911! Fire grows quickly if uncontrolled. A small fire in less than 60 seconds, can become a raging, choking inferno. Leave it to professionals to extinguish the fire.
-
Post your address and phone number by the telephone for baby sitters, guests and even yourself to use in case of emergency. 911 is uncomplicated, however, you may even forget your own name and address under extreme stress.
-
If a pan fire occurs, put a lid or cover on it. Tip the lid so it shields your arm from the flames as you place it on the pan. Turn off the heat.
Caution: Avoid water or the application of any towel, wet or dry on a pan fire.
-
Have your furnace serviced prior to cold weather season.
-
Replace old frayed Christmas tree lights.
-
Do not leave items cooking unattended.
-
Do not use electric lights on metal Christmas trees.
