Tough to be a CFL quarterback

10/1/2007

One of the interesting questions so far this year in the CFL is, why are there so many injuries to quarterbacks? It is true that going into the season, if you expect your quarterback to stay healthy all 18 games, you are embracing unrealistic expectations. You have to spend time, money and energy in making sure that quarterback number two is as close in ability to quarterback number one as possible. And the the can be said for quarterback number three!

I know what I did this summer - 2007 Pt 3

9/26/2007

When I was 15, I made a shortlist of the things I most wanted to do in life. Just to be clear, completing the human DNA map and mastering quantum physics weren't exactly on my radar.

James Duthie is back for another season. But before he begins his regular sports commentary, this week he offers up his 4th annual summer vacation diary. PART 2 SUMMER LUGE

Schultz: A painful process for Grossman

9/26/2007

Faith, by its most basic definition, "is a belief, without physical evidence." Going into Week Four in the National Football League, the Chicago Bears have lost faith in quarterback Rex Grossman.

Walling: Henderson did it 35 years ago

9/25/2007

Memorable dates in history. If you are in the 40-45 or older you will remember where you were this Friday some 35 years ago. It was Game Eight of the first and only Summit Series.

If you have frequented this column through the years (you really deserve some kind of government subsidy), you will have undoubtedly noticed the author's journalistic fascination (unhealthy obsession…whatever) with a certain female Russian ex-tennis player.

Schultz: My take on the Lions-Riders melee

9/24/2007

"Hey, did you see that brawl between the Riders and Lions on Saturday night?" That question will be asked over and over again this week from CFL fans across the country. It's a tell-all of who fought who, who got the most shots in an what effect it had on the game.

Leafs' Wellwood may require surgery

9/21/2007

The Toronto Maple Leafs could start the season without one of their key forwards, as centre Kyle Wellwood may require additional surgery. The team received word early Friday evening that extensive testing had discovered an issue in the same abdominal area that was surgically repaired in Montreal last season. The extent of the damage isn't known, and there is also the possibility the injury could be far more significant than originally feared.

McKenzie: Giroux impressing Flyers

9/20/2007

No one is forgetting Claude Giroux's name in Philadelphia now. After starring for Canada in the junior Super Series, Giroux is not just playing well in Flyer camp, he's been dominating. He was named tourney MVP in the Flyers' opening few days and GM Paul Holmgren says he's been one of their best players, period, and getting better every day.

Schultz: McNabb's remarks miss the mark

9/20/2007

McNabb is one of my favourite players in the NFL because of the way he handles adversity with intelligence and grace, but I do not think his statements this week about black quarterbacks are correct.

Quote of the Day

"While all of the stakeholders in our league agree that hitting is an important part of the essence of the NHL game, all were also unanimous in the belief that where a player deliberately targets an opponent's head, the conduct should be subject to review and the possible assessment of supplemental discipline."

- NHL Executive Vice President and Director of Hockey Operations Colin Campbell, discussing the 20-game suspension handed down to Philadelphia Flyers prospect Steve Downie.
