OTTAWA  (CP) - Wheelchair basketball player Jennifer Krempien, a three-time Paralympic gold medallist, has been named Canada's flag-bearer for the 2007 Parapanamerican Games in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil,  the Canadian Paralympic Committee said Friday.

''To be selected from so many talented and dedicated athletes makes this a very special honour and one I am looking forward to,'' Krempien, a 15-year veteran of the Canadian team, said in a release. ''The team is looking forward to and excited about having a good tournament in Rio.''

Krempien, 32, of Richmond, B.C.,  joined Canada's national wheelchair basketball team in 1992. She won Paralympic gold medals in 1992 in Barcelona, 1996 in Atlanta and 2000 in Sydney. She was also was a member of Canada's bronze medal-winning team at the Athens 2004 Games.

Bob Needham, Canada's Parapanamerican chef de mission, praised Krempien's leadership skills.

''She is perfectly suited to be the leader of a strong Canadian team competing in Rio de Janeiro,'' he said.


 

Canada is sending a team of 92 athletes to compete in eight sports at the  Games which begin Aug. 12 and run until Aug. 19.
