RIO DE JANEIRO, Brazil (CP) - Canada's 4x100-metre relay team won silver, while Dariusz Slowik of Richmond, B.C., captured bronze in men's discus at the Pan American Games on Saturday.

The two medals on the final day of track and field boosted Canada's total to 12, including six gold, and two more than the team won four years ago at the Pan Ams in Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic.

Slowik threw 57.37 metres on a cold and rainy night at Joao Havelange Stadium. American Michael Robertson won the gold with a throw of 59.24, while teammate Adam Kuehl took the silver with 57.70.

Richard Adu-Bobie of Ottawa, Anson Henry of Pickering, Ont., Jared Connaughton of New Haven, P.E.I., and Edmonton's Brian Barnett teamed up in the 4x100 relay to win silver in 38.87. Brazil took the gold in 38.81, while the Americans won bronze in 38.88.

Achraf Tadili of Montreal finished fourth in the men's 800 metres. The defending champion was outkicked down the final straightaway to finish in one minute 46.07 seconds. Cuba's Yeimer Lopez won the gold in 1:44.58, while Davide Kleberson took the silver in 1:45.47, and Fabiano Pecanha was third in 1:45.54.

Quote of the Day

"When you take the field, you're getting paid to make plays - to be in the right position, to be assignment-sound, and to play well. It doesn't matter where the standings are, it doesn't matter what the implications are, that is just an excuse. I can't stand excuses."

- Riders head coach Kent Austin, saying his team was not thinking about the fact that their loss to the Toronto Argonauts had little meeting for them in the standings.

Stat of the Day

Navy finally beat Notre Dame 46-44 in triple overtime on Saturday, ending the Fighting Irish's NCAA-record winning streak against the Midshipmen at 43 games. Roger Staubach was quarterback for the Midshipmen in 1963 when they last beat Notre Dame 35-14.
