The Gairdner Foundation extends congratulations to Barry Marshall
and J. Robin Warren
of Perth, Australia on being awarded the 2005 Nobel Prize in
Medicine “for their discovery of the bacterium Helicobacter
pylori and its role in gastritis and peptic ulcer disease.”
Dr. Barry Marshall received a Gairdner Award in 1996 “for
the discovery of the role of Helicobacter Pylori as a cause
of peptic ulcer disease and the benefit that patients receive
from its eradication.”
Dr. Marshall’s Nobel prize marks the 65th time that a
Gairdner awardee has won the Nobel Prize, after on an average
having received the Gairdner seven years earlier.
