AFL Players' Association Purposes


To provide an appropriate consultative mechanism for the AFL and Clubs to consult with the AFLPA, as the collective voice of players, in the making and implementation of player rules and other issues affecting an AFL player .


To achieve and maintain an appropriate level of fair minimum terms and conditions for all AFL players commensurate with the professionalism of the AFL competition and the demands placed on players.

 

To improve terms and conditions to ensure the AFL continues to attract top athletes to the competition.

To ensure a role for the players through the AFLPA in the development of policies, procedures and arrangements to be directed at player safety and welfare issues.

To establish a long term program committed to providing ongoing professional support and counseling in a wide range of matters such as personal development, financial, legal, marital, grief, etc.

To assist, participate and work with the AFL and Clubs to enhance the game nationally and increase the gross revenue of the competition.

AFLPA Strategic Plan

Following extensive consultation with members, Executive & Delegates, members the advisory board and AFLPA staff, the AFLPA in early 2005, introduced a three year strategic plan from 2005-2008. The consultation process provided the management of the AFLPA with a clear picture of what is important to the players and this is reflected in the strategic plan.  The publication of the Strategic Plan is a commitment to our transparency and accountability to our members - the players.

Strategic Aims

The Strategic Plan outlines 5 key broad strategic aims which are to:

Protect
" The value of the players in the AFL industry
" The player's terms and conditions of employment
" The AFL as the most successful elite sporting competition in Australia

Represent the collective interests of AFL players

Influence and lobby the AFL, AFL clubs, and federal and state governments in order to achieve favourable terms and conditions of employment for AFL players.

Develop players personally and professionally

Engage with the players, media and community

Strategic Objectives

After consultation with our players 11 objectives or key result areas were identified for incorporation into our Strategic Plan.  

Strength & Partnership
That the AFLPA has the strength, credibility and means to influence the decision making processes of the game.

Representation
That the AFLPA provides effective representation of its members and a forum for strong participation of player representatives.

Communication
Consistent and effective communication with players, members and the community.

Collective Bargaining Agreement
Protect and enhance the terms and conditions of employment through effective collective bargaining and industrial relations.

Image and Reputation of Players / AFLPA
Promote the positive and responsible contribution of AFL players and the AFLPA to the image of the game and the broader community.

Taxation and Superannuation
Secure optimal taxation, and superannuation arrangements for AFL players and the AFLPA.

Commercial Revenue Streams
Develop increased commercial revenue streams for both AFL players and the AFLPA.

Strength of the Game
Maintain the position as the most successful elite sporting competition in Australia.

Accountability
Establish the highest standards of AFLPA management whilst ensuring player involvement and ultimate control.

Education, Training and Personal Development of Players
Provide opportunities for players to enhance their education, training and personal development, and personal welfare.

Internal Human Resources
Establish the systems, attitudes and resources to offer the best possible support and development to AFLPA staff.
