AFLPA commited to playing its part to end violence against women

The AFL Players' Association applauds the AFL's commitment to tackling violence of any description against women. This is a society wide problem that demands a society wide response. However the AFL "industry" has the opportunity to provide community leadership on this issue. The release of the AFL discussion paper and introduction of a working group to investigate the issue provides an excellent opportunity for the AFL industry to play its role in working towards strategies to end such violence against women.
The AFLPA understands that the information released by the AFL is to be used as a starting point in order to encourage discussion and debate on this important issue. The AFLPA will fully involve itself in this process and is wholly prepared to play its part, be it campaigning against violence against women, taking part in anti-sexual harassment workshops or other proactive endeavours.
However some proposals mentioned in the discussion paper, such as the possible introduction of a 'sexual misconduct tribunal', are of a concern to the Association.
Whilst the AFLPA remains committed to working with the AFL and the various stakeholders on this significant matter, the Association cannot support any proposals which seek to deprive players of fundamental rights that they would otherwise be entitled to under the laws of the land.
This does not diminish the AFLPA's commitment to ending this issue. The Association continues to support a broad, community wide approach.
