Total Player Payments to increase

30 Jun 2005 - www.afl.com.au

The AFL today announced it had reached agreement with the AFL Players' Association to increase Total Player Payments (TPP) by three per cent for the upcoming 2006 season, with the increase to be fully funded by the AFL.

The Collective Bargaining Agreement between the AFL and the AFLPA had set down no increase for 2006, but did allow for an increase in 2007 based on the financial results of the AFL between 2004-2006.

AFL Chief Executive Officer Andrew Demetriou said the strong financial performance of the AFL had allowed for an increase and this was brought forward to next season, to reflect the role of the players and the clubs in the success of the competition.

"Our game is performing extremely well at this time, with record-level attendances across the country, and our CBA agreement enables us to acknowledge this success and share it with our players and clubs," Mr Demetriou said.

"An increase of three per cent for the 2006 season is also in line with the recent CPI increases to the TPP pool in recent years," he said.

AFLPA Chief Executive Brendon Gale said his association believed that any increase should also be used to assist those former players who had helped build the strength of the game.

"Our game is in a very strong financial position and the players deserve to be acknowledged for their efforts. The playing group, through the AFLPA, also believed it was appropriate that a share of this increase, across every club, should be directed towards a Past Players' Health Hardship Fund to assist former players," Mr Gale said.

Of the TPP rise of $189,000,the AFLPA has requested that $16,188 per club be allocated to a Players' Hardship Fund to assist former players. As such, a total of $259,000 across the league will be allocated to this Hardship Fund. The TPP amount for each club for the 2006 season will therefore rise from $6.3 million to $6.47 million.

The TPP funding breakdown is as follows:

   PER CLUB  TOTAL (competiton)
 2005 TPP  $6,300,000  $100,800,000
 Plus 3%  189,000  3,024,000
Less Players Hardship Fund contribution  (16,188)  (259,000)
 2006 TPP  $6,472,812  $103,565,000
