New players attend induction camp

9 Dec 2003 - Jane Woolard

Around 80 newly drafted players and elevated rookies are attending the AFL Players’ Association/AFL Induction Camp at the MCG this week.

The two-day induction camp aims to give the players an understanding of services and initiatives available to them as a member of the association, and an overview of the AFL and specific AFL rules.

Speaking at the camp on Monday, AFLPA CEO Rob Kerr said new players had to realise the pressures involved at the elite level.

“…they just have to consider themselves public property now whether they like it or not, because they’re AFL players and there is a lot of media focus on the AFL,” he said.

Kerr said that focusing on life after footy is a major theme of the camp, with past and current players addressing the new draftees.

Workshop topics include cross-cultural awareness and religious and racial vilification, AFL players and the law, anti-doping, drink-driving and speeding, and anti-gambling and family planning.
