Vale Peter Allen

25 Jun 2007 - Jason Murnane

It is with great sadness that the AFL Players' Association notes the passing of Life Member Peter Allen.

Peter, a former Executive Director of the VFL Players' Association and most recently the head of the AFL Coaches' Association passed away on Sunday June 24.

A loyal and committed servant of VFL / AFL players in a number of capacities over a 20 year period, Peter was awarded AFLPA Life Membership in 2005.

Peter began his career with the then VFL Players' Association in 1979 when he was appointed Manager of Administration, Marketing & Public Relations under the Presidency of former Hawthorn ruckman Don Scott.

In 1985 Peter assumed day to day leadership of the VFLPA when he was appointed Executive Director of the Association, a position he held for a further 13 years.

During this time, Peter impressed players and the football industry alike with his dignified and steady stewardship during a turbulent period of great change which saw the emergence of the professional era.  After 20 years of involvement with the players' representative body, Peter resigned from the Association in 1998 and he was succeeded by current AFL Chief Executive Officer Andrew Demetriou.

Most recently Peter served as CEO of the AFL Coaches' Association, offering his experience and expertise to the burgeoning representative body of AFL coaches.

AFL Players' Association Chief Executive Officer Brendon Gale paid tribute to Peter Allen's remarkable involvement and achievements.

"Over a long period Peter persisted in putting the interests of players on the agenda in an environment that was at times opposed to the notion of a collective representative body for players.  Peter's commitment to the entrenchment of the AFLPA within the football industry meant that he made a significant and lasting contribution to the conditions of employment enjoyed by AFL players  today".

"Peter's leadership resulted in a number of important achievements for the AFLPA, including a successful negotiation of the first Collective Bargaining Agreement (CBA) (then known as a Deed of Agreement) with the AFL.

In 1993, Peter also led a successful submission to the Australian Industrial Relations Commission which resulted in two further CBA's, in 1994 and 1995.

I offer my humblest condolences, on behalf of all players to Peter's surviving family, including his wife Lyn, daughters Micheliene and Felicity, sons in law Andrew and Joseph and grandchildren Marcus, Anna, Amelia and Fergus."
